It’s 2003. James Holden drops the fifth edition of the Balance mix series and we are completely blown away by this epic masterpiece. Right after its release, we dive into the tracklist to hunt down the records one by one. One track makes a particularly deep impression: the opening track by The MFA – The Difference It Makes.
In 2004, the track is released on Holden’s own Border Community label. We continue to follow The MFA, and tracks like Motherload, Two Billion Year Journey and Throw It Back (We Will Destroy You) find their way into our record bags.
After that, things go quiet around the duo Alastair Douglas & Rhys Evans. Until suddenly, in 2021, a new single appears. And in 2023, even a full album. Now The MFA are back with their own label, launching with a remastered and remixed version of The Difference It Makes. None other than Nathan Fake and Joe Goddard take on remix duties.
This release felt like the perfect moment to get in touch and ask if they would create a Stookcast for us.
And here it is.
A beautiful mix featuring tracks from The MFA of course, but also from artists such as SOPHIE, Overmono, Felix The Housecat and Basic Channel.

#tbt to the Summer when we were lucky enough to attend the mastering session for ‘The Difference It Makes’ with Jason Goz aka Transition Mastering. Jason’s a legend in the scene who’s done it all by himself and been part of the process for artists like Burial, Skream and Coki and getting a chance to see his process and talk to him whilst he pushed everything through his analogue chain was simultaneously great fun and a fantastic learning experience. ‘Use your ears’! As Jason said!
