Belemnitella americana 🌊 🦑
Belemnites are an extinct squid-like cephalopod that widely roamed the Cretaceous sea of New Jersey, propulsing through the water in large schools. Instead of having shells outside of their body, like ammonites and nautiloids, their shells were internal like those of modern cuttlefish. This straight, chambered shell allowed them to control their buoyancy and maneuver through the water.
The bullet-shaped belemnite shells—called guards—are probably the single most common Cretaceous fossil in NJ, and they’re known worldwide for their distinct amber color. Colloquially they’re called squid pens.
