Our 5* production of Three Sisters ❤️
“It ought to be the yardstick with which to measure past and future iterations of the play.” - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Telegraph
“Laughter rings round the house in the opening scene. My heartrate subsides a little and I permit myself an internal whisper, “They get it”.” - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Arts Desk
Chekhov has been a PROCESS. I remember coming in on my first meeting for the role and my fellow scene partner and I agreeing we’ve “no idea what this play is about” but we were going to find out.
As we mined the text, dug into the deepest wells of our emotions and dared to lean on each other - the world (sort of) became clearer. But the BIGGEST shift of all, FOR us all, was in understanding the rhythm.
The difference between falling into a sedative Chekhov drama and singing from an alive Chekhov dramedy is in honouring the rhythm.
When an ensemble gets into the same play, sings from the same rhythm and leaves all attempts to self-serve at the stage door - THEN Chekhov comes alive.
I had no idea Chekhov was funny. I had no idea Chekhov was entertaining. I had no idea Chekhov was accessible. Until this process. And now my understanding of, appreciation for and trust in Chekhov has sky rocketed.
This has really been a process of trust. Trust in one’s self, trust in fellow collaborators, trust in the text, trust in the world, characters, arcs, trust in the rhythm, trust in CHEKHOV (I mean this play has literally been done for 124 years and counting, so he’s gotta be onto SOMETHING..)
We have all worked so hard. We have each been individually and collectively challenged during the process of breathing life into this production - that to see our efforts understood and loved by those who see the show, by those who KNOW Chekhov, to be told our production “GETS IT”, means truly everything.
I am SO proud of our entire team.
And I’ve gotta say…Rory Mullarkey & Anton Chekhov really do go hand in hand 🤝
