Over the course of 20 years and five albums, the members of Chico five-piece band Surrogate—vocalist/guitarist Chris Keene, guitarist/vocalist Michael Lee, keyboardist Daniel Martin, drummer Jordan Mallory, and bassist Daniel Taylor—have been slowly perfecting a more intelligent take on the standard, guitar-driven rock sound. Surrogate draws inspiration from the shoegaze and introspective indie bands of the ‘90s and 2000s while also incorporating hefty amounts of contemporary lyrical wit and classic melodic sensibility on their self-produced albums, including the band’s most recent effort, 2023’s Space Mountain.
