“Kālaththin Idaiveli” (காலத்தின் இடைவெளி) suggests a suspended moment in time - a pause where past connections (between Bharatanatyam and Ballet) can be remembered, felt, and possibly rekindled. It evokes the idea of a timeless meeting ground, where despite the separation imposed by history and society, there’s still a space left open: a silence waiting to be filled with grace and unity again.
A duet to Netru Aval Irundhal, this piece brings together Bharatanatyam and Ballet - two forms rich in history, rhythm, and grace. Though worlds apart, their movements find harmony, reflecting a bond beyond language and culture.
Each dancer embodies a rich tradition, shaped by history, culture, and society - two parallel legacies that, despite sharing common threads of expression, have long been placed in separate boxes. The duet begins in harmony, where mutual admiration and exchange unfold through movement. They learn from one another, lift each other up, and find unity in their shared reverence for dance.
But as the piece evolves, the harmony begins to unravel. Society’s invisible boundaries creep in, and what was once a shared language becomes dissonant. They grow distant - no longer acknowledging, no longer moving together. By the end, they pass each other like strangers, dancers who once moved as one now unable to recognise the other.
This project is a reflection on unity, separation, and the silent power of tradition and time. It invites the watchers to witness not just a fusion of styles, but the fragility of connection when culture is divided instead of celebrated together.
