KLOKE X SMALLTOWN | WORKSHOP
This Melbourne Design Week, we're opening the store for something a little different.
Join us for a hands-on rope-making session with Sarah Parkes (@_smalltown_ ), one of the artists and designers behind Future Comfort, our experimental chair made from timber offcuts and rope woven from Kloke's own textile remnants. The chair is on display in-store throughout the festival, and this is your chance to learn how it was made.
Learn the technique, work with reclaimed materials, and leave with your own piece of Kloke Rope.
Saturday 23 May | 10:00–11:30am |199 - 201 Little Collins St

I love the @fishcreekteacosyfestival . It’s delightful and to me represents a lot of things about our beautiful little town.
Last festival I was the Official Judge! The pressure! This year I have an outdoor sculpture in collaboration with @itsnodramatheatre , and I’m hosting two workshops on Sat 16th and Sun 17th May.
Needle felting has just 1 spot left and cord making has a bunch! Both are held at the lovely @pain_perdu_fish_creek , with Capu providing a cheese plate to share AND a glass of wine. What more do you want! A couple of hours making something fun, having a chat while snacking with wine. Perfect 🤌🏽

Excited to be collaborating again with @itsnodramatheatre with Dreamweaver, an outdoor installation that will be part of Fish Creek’s @fishcreekteacosyfestival from May 16.
The ensemble visited my studio recently and we explored weaving and sculpture using silage wrap. Love this crew!

As part of @lyrebird_presents_at_meeniyan long weekend festivities, I was invited by @tooraartsnetwork to install my silage wrap woven works alongside @ellenm_taylor at @trulli_meeniyan .
They’re up for today so come along to the Artist Networking Event to see them, 4-8pm. I’ll be there eating some delicious pizza and hoping to hear @mwardtravelogue playing across the road at the Hall.
As @j.a.s.m.i.n.m.c.n.e.i.l.l writes, our works ‘are made from the landscapes of South Gippsland. Both works incorporate found objects from the local fields, one of natural elements and the other of man-made ones. Their materiality at once connects and opposes these works, together offering a contemporary take of both physical and personal landscapes’.
CRISSCROSS opens tomorrow @lon_retreat , a beautiful hotel and gallery space in Point Lonsdale, from 1-3pm.
Friends in the neighbourhood or anyone up for a Sunday adventure, it would be lovely to see you.
All proceeds from drink sales go to our Bass Coast/South Gippsland Wildlife Rescue & Shelter that does amazing work.
What a beautiful day installing the exhibition CRISSCROSS at @lon_retreat Gallery by Sarah Parkes. Make sure you come down to celebrate Sarah Parkes worked aka @_smalltown_ - opening party Sunday 8th of February 1-3pm at Lon Retreat - 25 Gill Road, Point Lonsdale. All are welcome! This beautiful show by Sarah explores her regional life in South Gippsland and her incredible knotting skills she has been refining for 20 years in her business @_smalltown_
What made you start weaving with silage and what does it mean to you to work with
this material?
“A disused roll of silage wrap made its way into our paddock from a neighbouring farm, and I was
immediately drawn to it as a material. I feel a responsibility to continually reconsider the
materials I use in my practice, and introducing unfamiliar or overlooked materials helps to
expand and disrupt how I work. I’m interested in the point where the natural and the
human-made collide, something that feels especially present in farming landscapes. Working with discarded or waste materials that carry their own history and character changes my approach - I have to respond to their limitations and embrace their possibilities. It’s both challenging and deeply enjoyable.” Sarah Parkes @_smalltown_
