Objects from various โlost placesโ are extracted from their original contexts and reimagined within a new framework of meaning. The selected items and their sites of discovery are deliberately โgreyed outโ โ an act of visual neutralization that erases their original color and surface qualities on site. This desaturation shifts the focus toward formal elements such as structure, volume, and spatial presence. These greyed objects function both as documentation and as reference. In the studio, they are transformed in scale and materiality and collaged into new, autonomous works โ liberated from considerations of weight or gravity. For me, this process of transformation is the most compelling: it is where the works emerge in the space between reality and abstraction, between found object and independent sculpture.

As part of HALLENKUNST Chemnitz, Iโm leaving the realm of painting with the new series โSHELTERโ in order to open up a new space for expression. Found objects (objets trouvรฉs) from public spaces or abandoned environments are transformed in scale (1:35) and material and form as a monochrome, three-dimensional composition a staged reality in a miniature world of their own. By decontextualizing the found objects, Iโm deliberately playing with opposites: Destruction and creation, chaos and order, reality and fiction. These dioramas not only refer to the original beauty of these places, but also show the fragility and transience of urban structures in an unusual staging, which is documented in this new book and revealed through many detail shots.

๐บRAFAEL GERLACH โข SATONE โข HALLENKUNST โข 28.08.2025 - 21.09.2025 โข Markthalle Chemnitz
We are very happy to welcome another artist at this years edition of HALLENKUNST who has been part of the exhibition 14 years ago: RAFAEL GERLACH alias SATONE (@_satone_ ) from Munich ๐ฏ๐จ
Rafael was born in Venezuela in 1977 and grew up in Munich. The trained graphic designer discovered his interest in graffiti early on, but continuously developed a style that, far removed from historically evolved forms and imagery, negates the supposedly superficial beauty. With his non-Euclidean geometric abstractions and futuristic-looking forms he constructs a formal but intangible world; a world in which spatial effects exist without being predetermined in their expression by classical physical laws.
Within HALLENKUNST 2025 the artist works way beyond his traditional canvas or murals to introduce a diorama work as a continuation of his new series of works entitled โShelterโ. Known for his abstract formal language, he is now exploring plasticity in his collage-like approach and in this way creating new territory filled with representational objects. Objects found in public space (objets trouvรฉ) or abandoned places in Chemnitz and around are transformed in scale and material and form a new kind of reality as a staged composition.
If his murals in public space engage in a dialog with their surroundings, in the diorama this dialog is concentrated inwards and involves the viewers who enter this stage. In this way, a fictitious and unknown landscape is created during his artist residency for the HALLENKUNST exhibition space that immediately awakens memories of the familiar, creating an atmosphere that competes with the reality of the world through materiality, scale and the depiction of transience and is not free of contradictions. We really looking forward to this installment on display from August,28, 2025 on at Markthalle Chemnitz. ๐ฏ
