RECAP | Nord Süd Trail 🇩🇪 all info & itinerary The NST or Nord Süd Trail is Germany’s longest long-distance trail, connecting the northernmost point of the country with the southernmost point. The trail is incredibly versatile. 🤩 The landscapes are ever-changing, but all of them will let you gaze in wonder. Even better, a marvellous community gathered around the trail, even though it was just established in 2020! I experienced so much help, so much hospitality - it really changed my perspective of people… 🙏 Though wild camping is forbidden, it was no problem for me to find shelters along the way. Every 20-30 km you will find a hut, in which you can just sleep, if you want. Pitching up your tent next to the huts is commonly tolerated. ⛺If you don’t want to do this, you can go to campsites or hostels/hotels. Resupplying was never a big challenge. I came across a grocery store every 1-3 days! Same with water. You can find drinking water at every cemetery! Check out the website of the Nord Süd Trail. You will find a resource map with every hut, campsite, grocery store, water source and a list of trailangels. 🗺️ Such a long trail is never easy and needs a variety of skills and preparation. Take it slow at the beginning, as you will experience a lot of roadwalking. The elevation will start to kick in at 1000 km. Physically, the hardest section is definitely the Rheinsteig - or as we call it: the rollercoaster. 🎢 Enjoy the German food along the way, with Fischbrötchen in the North or Käsespätzle in the South. Drink German beer and wine - we have some of the best! 🍻 And especially enjoy the German hospitality. Day 174 - 187 | Nord Süd Trail 🇩🇪 | km 3131 - 3528 1️⃣7️⃣4️⃣-1️⃣7️⃣8️⃣Lörrach - Blumberg 125 km To start the second Black Forest section, I walked from Lörrach to Wehr, where I started the Schluchtensteig. These deep-incised valleys were so beautiful, even more, when autumn slowly started to kick in, and leaves started to turn to a golden colour. 🍂 I had so much fun to ponder over the small waterfalls or the steep cliffs, especially in the Wutach valley. ↗️ 5076m ↘️ 4678 m | 5 days 1️⃣7️⃣8️⃣-1️⃣8️⃣3️⃣ Blumberg - Lindau 157 km Next, I had to cross the Hegau, a landscape which is dominated by old, solitary volcanos, with castles on the top. A marvelous corner of Germany. From the top of the volcanoes, I could also see the Bodensee, the biggest lake of Germany. For two days, I walked the entire length of the lake. The Alps were almost in reach. 👀 ↗️ 3039m ↘️ 3333m | 6 days 1️⃣8️⃣3️⃣- 1️⃣8️⃣7️⃣Lindau - Haldenwanger Eck 107 km At one point of the journey, you will realise that you will do certain things for the last time: the last resupply, the last time pitching up your tent, the last time cooking delicious instant noodles. I left Lindau to walk into the Allgäuer Alps. I was excited about the last km’s, again joined by my girlfriend and one of my best friends. The Alps are just stunning! ⛰️On the last day, only 10 km were remaining. With a wild mix of emotions I flew up the mountains, and then I could see it: the Haldenwanger Eck, the southernmost point of Germany, marked as number 147. Tears broke through and happiness, joy and pride, but also hunger, tiredness and probably a little bit of melancholy spiralled through my head. Day 135 - 174 | Nord Süd Trail 🇩🇪 | km 2293 - 3131 1️⃣3️⃣5️⃣-1️⃣4️⃣3️⃣ Saarschleife - Bockenheim 293 km 5 shorter trails were combined for this section of the NST, such as the Veldenzweg or the Pfälzer Höhenweg. I followed shallow ridges of the Sankt Wendeler Land and the Pfälzer Bergland, all accompanied by beautiful panoramas. This section was much easier to walk than the previous one. Albeit being a roadwalk, the Soulboys ridge is one of the most stunning places of the whole trail.  ↗️ 6582m ↘️ 6734 m | 9 days 1️⃣4️⃣3️⃣-1️⃣4️⃣9️⃣ Bockenheim - Schweigen-Rechtenbach 167 km The Pfäzer Weinsteig is an amazing section of the NST, which runs through the second largest wine-growing area of Germany. Yes, you can buy wine everywhere, and yes, the wine is amazing! 🍷 One of my fondest stories happened here, when I reached the St. Anna hut, where I wanted to sleep for the night. But the hut was already occupied by a group of 20 soldiers of the German armed forces. After a quick chat I was invited to some wine, and I had a very protected night. ↗️ 4009m ↘️ 3908m | 7 days 1️⃣4️⃣9️⃣- 1️⃣6️⃣2️⃣Schweigen-Rechtenbach - Pforzheim 99 km This short section was like a two-sided coin for me. Unfortunately, I fell sick again, and had to pause for 9 days. Though, some of these days I spent at an amazing trailangel. ↗️ 1233m ↘️ 1234m | 14 days 1️⃣6️⃣3️⃣-1️⃣7️⃣4️⃣Pforzheim - Lörrach 282 km Commencing in Pforzheim, is the oldest long-distance trail in Germany, the Westweg! It runs through the whole Black Forest and has some of the most amazing views of the NST - if you have good weather! I had lots of rain and fog. 🌨️ Just before the Feldberg, I had to let a storm pass through and waited in a hut for 3 nights. Day 103 - 134 | Nord Süd Trail 🇩🇪 | km 1766 - 2292 1️⃣0️⃣3️⃣-1️⃣2️⃣3️⃣ Bonn - Bingen 253 km Together with HungryBear, I started the physically most challenging section of NST - the Rheinsteig. Within the community, it’s just called the rollercoaster. When you look at the elevation gain, you will know why. 🎢 As I currently live in Bonn, we used my place as a base camp for the first days - future thruhikers are also very welcome to crash at my place! To say the deep-incised Rhine valley is breathtaking, is an understatement. View after view will blow your mind! ↗️ 12496m ↘️ 12283m | 24 days 1️⃣2️⃣4️⃣-1️⃣2️⃣6️⃣ Bingen - Rudolfhaus 74 km Crossing the Rhine, I started the Soonwaldsteig, again accompanied by a good friend. The first day, we just walked uphill carrying 6 l of water each, as finding water at this section is quite challenging. But the Soonwaldsteig is also very rewarding! 🤩Remoteness, tranquility, relaxation - and the Teufelshütte (Devil’s hut), indisputably the best hut on the whole NST. An amazing view, water and even solar-powered electricity to charge your devices. ↗️ 2892m ↘️2718m | 3 days 1️⃣2️⃣7️⃣-1️⃣3️⃣4️⃣ Rudolfhaus - Saarschleife 201 km The Saar-Hunsrück-Steig crosses the quite remote Hunsrück. Again, this section is physically challenging, but it is so worth it. For example, in the area of Hermskeil, I followed a small stream, which was dammed by beavers! 🦫 Experiencing this marvellous nature in Germany is almost transcendental.
