We are excited to have launched our PolicyWISE Internship Programme this autumn and to introduce our very first intern, Lucy Adams. Lucy recently finished an MSc in International Development at the LSE and has a strong interest in environmental policy following her undergraduate degree in Ecology and Economics. During her internship, she hopes to gain specific insight into the variation in biodiversity regulation between the UK nations and harness this experience for future work in policy. We look forward to having her as part of the PolicyWISE team! If you're interested in joining our PolicyWISE Internship Programme, please contact Catherine May at [email protected]

The past year of PolicyWISE has been exciting to say the least! The team have worked to shine a light on the value that comparative policy research can bring and began to lay the groundwork for improved four nations policy learning. More recently we have been recognised at the The Open University Research Excellence Awards 2024 for Outstanding Knowledge Exchange and look forward to continuing this work!

In July 2024, we hosted the second in our Roundtable series in Cardiff. The event brought together senior policymakers, analysts, academics, think-tank colleagues, education leaders, inter-governmental officials, and economists – from across Wales, and beyond to examine cross- nation policy learning and challenges over the last 25 years. The key takeaways included: * Intergovernmental relations should emphasise collaboration and learning, rather than competition. * Inter-Parliamentary co-operation is essential for policy leaning and comparative analysis. * The need for multi-lateral learning, avoiding England as the dominant and recognising that some competition can be positive. We are glad to share the full report of the event here where you can read more via the link in our bio!

We've had a look at this week's King's Speech and set out some areas where we can see opportunities for comparative policy learning, and spotted that many of the policies are for England-only and/or take inspiration from equivalent interventions in the other nations. From announcements about housing, education and even Great British Energy some announced initiatives are already well underway in the other nations.

Labour’s UK manifesto proposed some new Commissioners, including one for the Armed Forces. Our latest Wise in 5 examines the role of Commissioners (and Commissions) across the nations of Britain and Ireland. It clarifies which commissioners are England-only, UK-wide, or specific to one nation. We set out the roles, responsibilities, and territorial remit of some of the key commissioners across the nations which you can read more via the link in our bio
