Depending on what page you’re seeing this reel on, you probably either know me for being a painter, or you know me from being a photographer. Either way, welcome to both of my pages! 😄📸🎨✨ Hey, I’m Shay, and I do both! Lol! ✨ For the last 3 years, since finding out about PhotoSpiva, I have submitted photos to the competition which I found out has been going on 1977, making it the longest running competition of its kind in the U.S. (according to Google) Last year, @dqarts501 sent me a post of a concept that he wanted to try and I was like “bet, let’s do it!” So we get in the studio and play around and come away with a set of photos based on the concept. In December 2024, when submissions opened, I submitted 5 of the images from the session to the competition. “Closing Ceremony” was the selected image for PhotoSpiva! Friday, we attended the opening reception and had the best time! I always love visiting the @spivacenterforthearts ! Everyone is always so sweet! The selection of work in the exhibit is wonderful and I’m honored to have our photo be featured alongside such amazing talent! This exhibit will be running from now until May 3! So, Missouri peeps and peeps in the surrounding areas, go have a look at it while it’s up. I’ve been photographing events and community feeds for @secondhelpingnwa for several years now. Recently I got the chance to work restructuring on the Second Helping website-refreshing the copy and also updating the photos. Second Helping has played a big role in our Northwest Arkansas community for YEARS-feeding and being a source of hope for all. In refreshing the photos this was an opportunity to crack open my archive from past events and I felt proud. Proud of the work that is being done and also happy to have been to capture some of these moments. These moments work to help tell the story of Second Helping. Every event, every volunteer, every connection made, every fist bump…it’s all part of a growing web of goodness pumped into the community. Welp, that first slide is pretty telling. I’ve thought about that one slide a lot since this event for many many reasons. Last Wednesday @circlesnwa hosted their “Home is Where the Hardship Is” event and there was so much useful information shared from panelists. Information that really gave you a look into the state of housing in our area. I appreciated photographing this event and getting to see people talking. Sharing this information, being transparent about what’s truly happening with our residents is important. I heard someone at their table say they appreciate being informed and they want this information but also that this information makes them feel powerless to change things. So, where do we go from here? (If you didn’t get a chance to make it out to this event I believe the replay from the live stream is still available. 2 years ago I was in an observer (and photographer) for the Circles NWA Big View event that was hosted at the @fayettevillepubliclibrary . 2 years later I am part of the @circlesnwa family as an ally in Cohort 3! “Circles NWA is a community-driven program that works to increase upward mobility for individuals and families in poverty in Northwest Arkansas. Based on the national Circles®USA model, the Circles program builds intentional relationships (social capital) across socioeconomic lines that help open up long-term pathways for economic mobility and self sufficiency.” (Copied from the Circles website) We meet every Wednesday at Genesis Church in Fayetteville for about 2 hours where we have a meal together and work alongside Circle Leaders to help move them toward their goals. It’s the best spent 2 hours of any Wednesday that I have ever had...it’s a beautiful feeling being able to come together with others and know that you have something to contribute that can help to better someone else’s life. All that being said, coming up on April 10th is Circles NWA’s big view event “Home is Where the Hardship Is: The Stress of Housing in Arkansas”. “ Home is where the heart is, or so the saying goes. It’s what we all want home to be like. But as we listen to the housing stories of our Circle Leaders—renters and families seeking safe, stable, and secure housing—we realize it may be more accurate in Arkansas to say: Home is where the hardship is. Join us for the next Circles “Becoming Visible” event as we delve beyond the headlines to explore the real experiences of individuals and families facing the stress of housing in Arkansas. Together, we’ll make visible what is often invisible in the housing conversation. Creating real change requires a community committed to the change—a community that values empathy and compassion in how Arkansas addresses housing and supports renters. Be part of a community committed to reviving the heart in Arkansas housing!
