PETER ROBINSON - ‘THE DISC THAT WOULDN’T PLAY’   Submission for OTHERSET Direction 01 “My 7 year old laptop has a flickering screen & its CD/DVD player does nothing but spin and grind. These are the sounds of it chewing on a CD full of scanned photos, whirring and jittering endlessly but not reading any digital info. CDs work by reflecting light in patterns, so in place of the photos I was trying to download I created new visual information - taking pictures of the surface of the CD on my phone, and scanning the screen. CHLOE CROUCH / CHLORINE - ‘In My Room’ Submission for OTHERSET Direction 01 “Each sound comes from different areas of my room, from things I hear so often they all blend together into a stream of white noise. The audio is a symbol of the calmest moments, when the sun is setting, the room is warmed by lamps, and the vinyl comes to an end. 

In My Room stems from a place of comfort. It is a representation of familiarity, of peace and chaos rolled into one. Bedrooms are a perfect encompassment of the person that made it their own. Even in it’s emptiest moments, my room is full of colour, full of shiny things and things that glow. It is full of things that mean everything and things that mean nothing at all. YANN BRIEN - Babel Submission for OTHERSET Direction 01 “This piece explores the gap between the creator’s intention and the viewer’s interpretation. While these two elements are connected, they often don’t align, as neither can be fully conveyed in words, leaving space for individual interpretation.  During the creation process, I listened to white noise—a random, formless sound. ROBERT GILLESPIE - Lacrimosa (AN INTRODUCTION TO SUBJECTIVITY) Submission for OTHERSET Direction 01 “This piece has been produced in response to Otherset’s Deep Listening First Direction project and is an investigation into Pauline Oliveros’ philosophy of deep listening.  The audio is an urban field recording made surreptitiously in a London cafe. DAVID ANDREWS / AndAtWhatCost - Otters Pocket Submission for OTHERSET Direction 01 “AndAtWhatCost spent a family holiday listening out for inspiration, until on the last day, he connected with a family of otters where he captured the sounds from inside their enclosure just before feeding time. Otters had never evolved to make much noise, until humans started to set up fishing villages. The otters found if they annoyed the humans, they would be fed fish to keep quiet. During the deep listening part of this project, he noticed the otters had done a painting, which wasn’t totally dissimilar to the textures in his own work. The colours were taken from their fur. Starting its life as three photos – a pink blanket, the sky on a clear day, and the inside of a washing machine – as well as the sounds of me putting my laundry into the machine, the work distorts and transforms what may usually be considered ‘ordinary’ into a surreal landscape, inviting its viewers to consider what lies beneath the surface. FABIO BARROS - Claustro dos Corvos Submission for OTHERSET Direction 01 “Claustro dos Corvos” is a water reservoir on the Convent of Christ in Tomar, Portugal. The Convent was built over five centuries (XII - XVIII), it is a testimony to an architecture combining Romanesque, Gothic, Manueline, Renaissance, Mannerist and Baroque elements. Deep Listening is a practice that dives into the realm of sonic mediation.
