Waste reimagined into luxury accessories - from Manchester Art Gallery
“A fashion design graduate and alumnus of Manchester Fashion Institute, Oscar Munro is a designer who challenges the conventions of fashion production by embracing its remnants, not just typical deadstock, but repurposed sailcloth, hot air balloon off-cuts, overlooked industrial materials, and exhibition banners sourced from leading art institutions across the region.
Munro’s work is defined by a balance of craft, sustainability, and spontaneity. Rather than imposing a fixed vision, he lets the unpredictable nature of waste materials guide his creative process. For him, repurposing isn’t just a sustainable choice, It’s a source of inspiration. Whether crafting one-off accessories or bespoke garments, each piece begins as a dialogue with the material, responding to its quirks and hidden possibilities.” -Manchester Fashion Institute

Fun workshop at @ucenmcr@themcrcollege for the Future Creatives programme in partnership with @mcrartgallery
When I first started sewing I absolutely hated it - it was only when I’d made something I was proud of and could use/ wear I started to enjoy it everyday. The idea behind this workshop was for everyone to take something home with them that they could use & enjoy - hopefully an inspiring one to keep up the craft!
Big thanks to everyone at the college and @kaytwoods_ and @manasa.amarnath for all your help!
The MAG traveller’s bag. 1/3 made and available in the @mcrartgalleryshop
Made in collaboration with Manchester Art Gallery using their Unpicking Couture Exhibition banners for the main shell. It is hand crafted by Oscar and the help of his 3 students on placement from MMU.
The banner is combined with seatbelts from EMR Salford and deadstock zipping donated by YKK. It features multiple pockets inside & out and is fully waterproof thanks to the hot air balloon off – cut lining. The bag is wearable in 4 ways including a rucksack.
Carried out of the Gallery and taken to The Yard, Cheetham Hill the banner was cleaned and prepared for cutting. “When we first got the banner and rolled it out, I remember thinking it had an essence of the streets of Manchester; the people that visited the exhibition, the trams, the streets… that felt special to me – like a capsule of time”.
Dyed by sunlight, the Suntoucher collection features unique stripes and colours created through time.
4/6 left and now available on the website.
100% cotton denim chambray.
Linen ‘shacket’ I made for @alimunrodesign aka my mum!
Loved making this piece using the Five Moons fabric she designed back in the 90’s for the legendary Georgina Von Etzdorf @gveandco - a massive influence on my style.

Oscar Munro – Preview ➕🔳🔘
Join us for a special preview evening at our upcoming Night at the Gallery with designer Oscar Munro, where he’ll unveil his bespoke MAG collection.
Last winter, MMU fashion graduate and apprentice tailor Oscar Munro was invited to reinvent our retired Unpicking Couture exhibition banners. Inspired by slow fashion, he transformed them alongside rescued materials like hot air balloon offcuts, seatbelts, car leather and sailcloth into a series of thoughtful, luxury accessories.
The evening opens with Oscar introducing the collection, followed by plenty of time to browse and purchase pieces in the shop.
We can’t wait! See you there 🥂
