My backyard, just 3 days before fall shows up for real here in the PNW. 🍁 This tree is always the first to flare.
What’s the first sign of autumn where you are??

Field Notes (Vol. 11) 09/16/25 5:25am
For the ones who showed us how it’s done
I’ve lost mentors before. But this one hurts different.
Robert Redford wasn’t just an actor, director, producer or enviromentalist..
He was a current.
A river I kept stepping into... again and again... through his work.
The Natural. Jeremiah Johnson. A River Runs Through It. The Sundance Kid.. on and on and on..
He didn’t just play characters. He gave them breath.
Quiet power.
A kind of weathered grace that felt... earned.
He was the ultimate storyteller..on screen and behind the camera.. behind all those scenes..
He built worlds. Shaped culture. Whispered soul into the frame.
And he did it with integrity and restraint. With fire that didn’t need to shout.
Since I was a kid, I always looked to him like a signal fire.
He made the kind of art that stays with you. That doesn’t explain itself.
That haunts and holds and says...
Keep going.
Michael, make something that matters.
But don’t lose your soul doing it.
I produce differently because of him...
I write differently because of him.
I stay in it longer because of him.
And yeah.. some part of me still wants to be the guy on the mound under the lights,
not to win, but just to belong to that kind of story. This is what ultimately matters most in my life.
If there’s a secret to my work and the current work I’ve been slowly revealing, part fiction, part reckoning, part score, it’s this .. Redford’s fingerprints are all over it.
The way I frame a scene.
The way I stay quiet a beat longer than most.
The way I try to let the story breathe...
He’s gone now.
But damn if the river doesn’t still run through it.
Thank you Mr. Redford

Two Michaels... One quiet storm
Sat across from Michael Shrieve at Robert Lang Studios.... cameras rolling, candlelight flickering through the glass... talking about the life and legacy of Alan White.
It wasn’t just drums and dates. We talked feel. That rare knowing only peers carry. The way Alan played for the music..
and something beyond it. The elegance in his force. The stillness inside the storm. The quiet, revolutionary way he approached drums… and life.
Shrieve opened up about friendship, presence, and what it means to hold the pulse for something bigger than yourself. We closed on his own beginnings... falling in love with rhythm, Woodstock, Altamont, and his years with Santana.
It felt less like an interview. More like something sacred.
The documentary continues.

Sat with Jon Anderson over the weekend in a room full of memory, music, and a whole lot of magic.
We didn’t just roll cameras... we time traveled.
He spoke about Alan...
Love.
Friendship.
Legacy.
What it means to truly listen.
What it means to witness.
This moment…
Part of something bigger.
The film continues.

Alan White Film Closing in on Major Milestone – A Special Thanks to Bob Rivers
Some projects take on a life of their own, and that’s exactly what happened on October 2, 2022, at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle, when we produced, multi-track recorded and multi-cam filmed Alan White’s tribute concert... a night dedicated to celebrating the life and legacy of Alan White, one of the greatest rock drummers of all time. His seminal work with John Lennon and George Harrison, along with his 50 year run as the drummer for YES, cemented his place in music history.
What started as a way to honor Alan became something bigger… a documentary on his life and musical journey.
Alan’s wife, Gigi White, and I formed One Take LLC over a year ago to produce and bring this vision to life, and now we’re reaching a major milestone: most of the music from the concert, portions of which will be included in the film, has been produced.
Bob, as many of you know, has been a great friend to Alan and his family. He was the Emcee at the concert, but behind the scenes, he has been a driving force in producing the music that came from that night and has played a pivotal role in moving this documentary forward.
Bob has been serving as an Executive Producer, overseeing the tribute concert recording post-production, and his expertise, dedication, and passion have been invaluable in shaping this project into something truly special. His incredible work has brought these recordings to life in a way that truly honors Alan’s legacy, and we couldn’t be more grateful. His talent and commitment shine through in every note.
Bob, we couldn’t do this without you. Thank you for everything!

🍂 Grateful for Every Chapter 🍂
This Thanksgiving, I’m taking a moment to reflect on the wild, beautiful, and sometimes messy journey life has been.
I’m grateful for creative projects that keep my soul fueled, friends who understand my quirks and keep me grounded, moments of laughter, deep conversations, and every tiny spark of inspiration. I’m also thankful for the big energy and the quiet, meaningful moments alike.
I’m especially grateful for the people who challenge and inspire me... especially those who show me life through their unique lens. I’m grateful for the stories I get to tell and the ones still unfolding, sometimes in the most unexpected ways. I’m thankful for the chance to grow, connect, and create meaning every day.
Here’s to embracing every moment, finding joy in the details, and savoring the company of the ones who matter most. Whether it’s through shared creativity, a great conversation, or simply being present, I’m reminded how lucky I am for the connections that light the way.
What’s something you’re thankful for this year? Let’s celebrate the good stuff together. 💛
