From the first material pulls to the final sculptural forms, this behind-the-scenes glimpse reveals how the concept came to life - layer by thoughtful layer. Tara and Meghan explored how mid-century warmth and contemporary ease could coexist, grounding the design in earthy textures and organic shapes inspired by the outdoors.
The early design work unfolded through studies of proportion, architectural gestures, and textural interplay - exploring how a sculptural fireplace, a sunken living room, and a nostalgic palette could harmonize. Each decision was shaped by a commitment to comfort, tactility, and creating a space that feels authentically lived-in.
What emerges is a design built on intuition, memory, and the subtle art of blending past and present. “Modern Nostalgia” is an IDEA+ concept shaped by curiosity, craft, and an unmistakable sense of home.

Pulling this gem from the archives—because why wouldn’t two designers hop in a tub for a photo op? Sometimes you just have to soak up a bath with a view, and the primary bath of the #sssshowhouse is definitely a showstopper.
When developing the the architectural design of the home, our goal was clear: fill the space with natural light. Thanks to a generous level of privacy from the neighbors, we went bold with full-height windows—not only at the vanity, but also in the shower. The result? A space washed in light, while perfectly framing views to the outdoors.

Nestled in the heart of Calgary, the Maple Leaf House @themapleleafhouse stands as a one-of-a-kind architectural gem that seamlessly blends mid-century design with modern sensibilities. Originally designed and built by the homeowners in 1966, this home is not only a testament to their craftsmanship but also features a striking maple leaf shaped footprint that sets it apart from other homes in the area. Many of the home’s original details are unique and handmade, from custom case pieces to bespoke finishes, which reflect the vision and dedication of its original designers. In 2022, Mera Studio Architects undertook an extensive transformation, breathing new life into the space while carefully preserving its original charm. The goal was to create a home that would function effortlessly for contemporary living without compromising the unique features that define its mid-century origins...
