The time we played a reproduction of the Intonarumori, experimental musical instruments invented and built by the Italian futurist Luigi Russolo between roughly 1910 and 1930. In 2012, @leeranaldo of Sonic Youth, wrote a score for the recreated instruments by @luciano_chessa at the @performanyc festival in @vict_0r ‘s telestudio. You-On is a collaboration between Masami Tomihisa and Jim White Three sessions, all improvised consisting of keyboard and drums were recorded at Jim’s in April and May of 2024. Guy Picciotto mixed, edited and sequenced the recordings comprising ‘New Side’, the duo’s first album together. You-On is two Japanese characters put together, asobu which means to play or to have fun and on which means sound.
‘New Side’ is a work of precise, at times otherworldly beauty. The interplay between Tomihisa and White is nothing short of uncanny — it seems hard to believe these are the results of their first recordings together.
A debut You-On show in New York will be announced shortly, will other appearance to follow, hopefully. Masami Tomihisa is a pianist, composer and improviser based in New York City. Prior to this, her most recent release was the ‘Invitations’ cassette released by Purplish in 2024. She is also one half of the duo Masaaki.
Space considerations prevent us from publishing Jim White’s entire associated discography ; his most recent solo album, his second such LP for Drag City, ‘Inner Day’ was released in the Autumn of 2025.

@_mas_ami__ performed in Grand Central this past Friday night. This was part of Dear New York, organized by @humansofny , which selected musicians to perform 1 hour sets throughout the day.
She applied on a whim using videos from the recording session for Invitation (featured in Batch #2). The performance was great and we were happy to play a role in her being selected.

Butsu Butsu is a participatory barter-based tea happening series that explores gift culture through exchange. Instead of monetary payment, guests are invited to offer a form of barter—goods, skills, or favors.
Now in its 8th edition, Butsu Butsu brings together artists from diverse creative disciplines for a shared, improvisational experience.
Collaborating artists for this edition include choreographer/performers Suiso co. (Maho
Ogawa with Benjamin Goosman and Emily Young); ceramicist Jennie Jieun Lee; designers Kristin Dickson-Okuda and Shin Okuda; artists Takuya Ikezai and Miyuki Akiyama; and musicians Barry Weisblat, Che
Chen, Talice Lee, Masami Tomihisa and Lary7.
Two sessions will be held at 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM. Guests may reserve a seated spot (limited to 10 participants per session; sign-up opens 30 minutes prior) or join as standing audience members without registration.

Last night’s show at @tveyenyc was incredible! It was great to have 2 of the first Purplish releases play a show together. @mas_ami_ (featured in batch #2) and @takaat_ (members featured in batch #1) are sonically very different, which is exactly what we love to pair together and it made for a truly special night. Audio from both sets will definitely be featured in upcoming episodes of Purplish Radio.
