When punishment becomes profitable, prevention is neglected.
Our new song, School 2 Prison Pipeline, out now, speaks directly to the reality of the School to Prison Pipeline from each artists experience and perspective. This track is for the youth being watched instead of listened to, punished instead of supported, and written off too early.
In cities like ours, students often are pushed out of classrooms and pulled into the criminal legal system through excessive suspensions, school policing, and zero-tolerance policies that punish instead of support. Black, Indigenous, racialized and low-income youth are hit the hardest. When schools respond to trauma with discipline instead of care, it increases the chances a young person drops out, gets criminalized, or disappears into a system that is built to contain rather than protect.
Behind it all is an economy that profits from incarceration. Private security in schools, surveillance companies, probation services, telecom providers in jails, construction firms building detention centres, and corporations supplying pharmaceuticals and technology to prisons that all benefit when more people are locked up and kept under watch.
