Describing Ma Bakerâs style in a word wouldnât suffice due to the amalgamation of funk, rock, jam, psychedelic EDM/house/rock fusion and their innate ability to connect with more than one type of folk.
From storage unit to stage, theyâve grown into a full-fledged jam band with a notable following that would seek the depths of the mitten just to hear their anthem âJammyâ. Beyond their fans, the local music communities of Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor lend a backbone to the bandâs ability to grow. For Ma Baker, the enthusiasm and heart behind this niche music scene has provided friendships, hope, and shared, euphoric experiences.
Like jam bands do, they improvise on compositions they have floating in their âBakeryâ abyss. Band mate, Dylan Risinger, explains, âit kind of falls into this practiced unpredictability, where I know these guys as people and musicians, so thereâs an idea of how jams could go, but Iâm still not quite sure whatâs going to happen. Taking a collective leap of faith and trusting each other to help us land on our feet.â
Beyond the mere joy of being spontaneous, Ma Bakerâs malleable ability is one of their strongest suits.
With the exception of some specific instances, their songs are written and rehearsed collectively. With this collaborative mindset, the Ma Baker troubadours merely find hope in the unified desire to create music.
Youâll find this same hope in their debut studio album, Weight Lifted, recorded and mixed at Fundamental Sound Co.
Ma Baker returns to the Fun Fest stage! For one of their only performances of the year! I have been working with Ma Baker for almost a decade now and you do NOT want to miss their set, as the sun goes down the park will transform into a dance party!
We're FIRED UP about this throwback Ma Baker interview on Stratton Setlist! đ„
We just rediscovered this BEAUTIFUL musical magic from a while back on @LoriStratton 's podcast with Ma Baker, and we're still BUZZING about it! This throwback episode has these incredible musicians getting REAL about that electric moment when different musical ideas CRASH together on stage!
You know what STILL gets us EVERY TIME? When the band talked about how "people say they like watching our faces" during shows - because YES! That's exactly what we've seen at Grove Studios for YEARS - that MAGICAL zone where musicians just GET LOOSE and let their weird faces fly! It's that primitive, in-the-moment ENERGY that makes live music so special!
And that jam they named after a galaxy? CALDWELL? That's the kind of creative spark that happens when we give musicians the right SPACE to get weird with it - back then and TODAY!
This throwback reminder is exactly why we built these studios with 24/7 access - because sometimes that galaxy-brain idea hits at 3AM and we believe creators need a proper space to let it EXPLODE right then and there!
Who's caught Ma Baker live since this podcast aired? Drop a comment below and let's show these local legends some LOVE!
