'To Tether,' a project by mother-and-daughter collaborators Lynne Smith and Eleanor Witt Wardlaw, is now on view at STNDRD. Join us a free public reception on Saturday, May 23 from 6:00–8:00 p.m., held in conjunction with openings at Granite City Art and Design District (G-CADD). The exhibition remains on view through Friday, June 19. 'To Tether' is an artifact of a time-based process informed by the invisible connection between two artists who are also mother and daughter. The work accumulated in layers as it was shuttled between Chicago and St. Louis between 2025 and 2026. It was most often entrusted to the US Postal Service and occasionally traveled through the Rust Belt by rail on Amtrak’s Texas Eagle. Provisional strategies and materials from the artists’ respective practices and domestic environments are both hidden and revealed: necklaces, remnants of a climbing rope, a bird feather, and dusty, pink meringue crumbs. The final form is an offering to tether as a form of back-and-forth play that mirrors the creative process. This collaborative work includes an extensive inventory of accumulated materials that reflects the layered and iterative nature of the artists’ exchange:  'To Tether,' 2026 (Materials by Layer)  two pieces of Wrigley’s Doublemint gum, saliva paper wrappers, wool cotton bedsheet, paint marker duct tape, pink meringue hand-woven cotton fragment, cotton thread, hand-dyed polyester ribbon bubblewrap, dryer lint, cotton thread, tape mulberry paper, alcohol markers, glue, pin two necklaces, hairtie, toiletries bag, silk, graphite tracing paper, torn shirt collar, India ink gold thread, brass safety pins wool, dryer lint, climbing rope remnants, bird feather, cotton string India ink beans, mesh bag for limes, Gertrude Stein quote on post-it note, studio note-to-self tracing paper, recipe, phragmites leaves, fabric swatch from ironing board cover pva, one white bean, one half of a split pea, graphite, jibberish acrylic, four foam earplugs, oil pastel, silver duct tape packing tape, cut paper, cut paint swatches cotton t-shirt, brads, t-pin, acrylic, ink cotton, shoelaces, brass key rings, paper-coated copper wire, wool
