Growing up,
@caf_online ’s AFCON 2008 was my peak sporting memory in Ghana, with the nation ablaze in promotional materials (paraphernalia). Fast forward to the 13th African Games in Accra, expectations were high (at least for me based of its calibre), but reality fell short. Lackluster promotion led to empty seats even at the opening ceremony.
As a brand marketing consultant and creative producer, I noticed missed marketing opportunities, like Ghana Athletics Federation’s inability to promote the ASICS partnership announcement. Determined to make a difference, I launched 4Korner Sports (on TikTok) with a team of creators (
@mr.tedbaker @agyeman_duah_ @dronemarshal @requansah and
@eddie_sekyere ), aiming to revolutionize content creation for the games. Our strategy was simple: create captivating content to boost interest.
Despite earlier challenges with acquiring accreditation, our work caught the eye of some Ghanaian sports federations, leading to collaborations and content commissions.
The closing ceremony showcased the marriage of sports and entertainment, leaving spectators in awe. The usual parade and passing of the baton to the next host, Egypt, were accompanied by music performances and fireworks, creating a spectacle to remember thanks to
@leapcreativestudio @prg_france @vivendi_sports and
@cqfd.live .
Looking ahead, streamlined organization and stronger marketing are crucial for the African Games. Consolidating under a single organizing body would facilitate smoother coordination and unlock opportunities for sponsorships and broadcasting. Sports associations must recognize the importance of branding and marketing to attract sponsors and elevate their profiles on the global stage.
