Thank you to The Straits Times and Chantal for the coverage of the Unnatural History Museum of Singapore. This project was commissioned by the DesignSingapore Council under the theme Nation by Design. Our former Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong once said, “Singapore is a nation by design. Nothing we have today is natural, somebody thought about it and made it happen… nothing was by chance.” That line struck us deeply. Singapore’s unlikely success has never come from natural resources, we have little of that. What we do have in abundance are bold, unconventional and innovative ideas and policies that transformed us from a third world to a first world nation in just 60 years. That in itself is a miracle. The Unnatural History Museum of Singapore takes inspiration from this spirit. It showcases some of our nation’s curious creations from hybrid flora to robotic fauna, unusual habitats to reimagined landscapes. This is our tribute to Singapore: A country shaped not by chance but by design.

Open daily from 9am to 9pm till 26 Oct, at the National Design Centre. Admission is free, and curiosity is mandatory!

Ben Stiller won’t be keeping watch here, but you can definitely explore some of our nation’s most curious creations, and even catch a couple of them “come to life”. 👀

Welcome to 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗧𝗼𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘄 – a sustainability exhibition like no other. School’s back in session; only this time, the canteen offers cricket protein bars and physical education class features a skateboard made from salvaged fishing nets.
Designed by Kinetic Singapore, this unconventional exhibition introduced visitors to critical environmental issues with classes spanning 10 subjects. Rather than teach or instruct, School of Tomorrow invited visitors on a journey of discovery, pairing eye-catching and approachable design with urgent problems and actionable solutions. Sustainability was also embedded throughout the process: most props were second-hand or borrowed, and when less sustainable materials were used, they were given a second life through public adoption after the show.
By blending play, humour, and critical thinking, this President*s Design Award 2025 Design of the Year made complex environmental issues engaging and inclusive for all ages. Explore how design can shape important conversations and inspire meaningful change at pda.designsingapore.org.
