Incorporating more โgroovesโ into my dance has begun.
I had mentioned to Kev on several occasions that lately, though I continue relegating control to the process, Iโm feeling more disconnected with myself during dance journey.
Donโt get me wrong: I appreciate the technical progression, the increased levels of confidence, the improved quality of movement.
However, I (lack for a better word) yearn for more โฆ dare I say โฆ fun โฆ more expressiveness โฆ less mechanical.
At the same time, Iโm aware that (in terms of my own dance related goals) we share a common vision, with rote, mechanistic movement NOT being the final state.
Trust. The. Process.
We shall loop back (I hope) to my unhinged self, the other parts of me id like to burst out and make an appearance, and not hide behind technique.
Separately, Iโm learning different ways to practice when Iโm on my own.
I was growing frustrated during some of sessions, struggling with constant moving targets. A new movement or technique would be presented to me, weโd drill it, and just as I was gaining proficiency, weโd context switch, mix it with other other skill, or increase difficulty or changing something completely unrelated.
This approach confers several benefits, also known as โlayeringโ and โinterleavingโ, two approaches to help solidify the movements in oneโs long term movement repertoire.
And itโs also โprogressive overloadingโ, working, at the edge of your limits, steady increases.
So, some takeaways from this session:
1๏ธโฃ the lower body (for now) maintains precision, while upper body can be โfreeโ (as a choice)
2๏ธโฃ some level of discomfort is learning a new movement is normal, but maintain mindfulness as to not injure oneself
3๏ธโฃ hold. Hold. Hold. Even at 115-120 bpm, we have plenty of time to stretch out a particular note
