Highly recommend draping the same swatches of different sized forms as it often opens up the possibilities ;)

To accept duality is to earn Identity
Published in @rollupmagazineok
My take on the ‘Mary Lou’ collection by @_karialexandra was to symbolize resilience, reclaimed spaces and diasporic creativity
This collection alone was an ode to Kari’s Peruvian and American heritage; represented through ancestral maximization and a hand crafted, detail oriented lifestyle.
When curating this project, I wanted to portray that same duality from my own ethnic mix of Dominican and African American.
Utilizing an industrial setting like this warehouse and mechanic shop is intentionally correlated to the opportunity and identity our cultures have taken in informal and technical labor. These spaces became entry points in the US where skill, hustle, and community mattered more than anything.
Often family owned, mechanic shops and industrial handiwork showcases Dominican ingenuity, Black entrepreneurialism, resourcefulness, and community through a neighborhood identity.
The attention to detail of our wardrobe; featuring hand crocheted knits, laser cut leather and hand sewn stones provided by @swarovski , is not only representative to the detailed wooden carvings featured in Peruvian history, but the luxury status, beauty and artistry we aim to reclaim in these spaces as well.
