The first Peanuts musical in 35 years presented multiple challenges, and our team was more than up to it.
đŹEpic staging, feature-style camera work, experimental lighting and a sweeping musical score work together to create a big-screen-feeling cinematic experience. Classic Schulz comic-strip staging for quieter moments allows the large-scale moments to resonate.
â¨A musical requires theatricality, which the animation team delivered by pushing their performances, delivering big emotion and big laughs.
đšAnd of course, the music: the full weight of nearly 100 musicians brought a wide range of emotions and experience to life, from the classic Peanuts piano trio to a rock band, a horn section, and for when Snoopy's imagination is too grand for even all of that, a full 78 piece symphony orchestra, recorded live in studio. All rooted strongly in Peanuts music history -- every song was conceived at the piano.

Itâs almost impossible to capture the hilarity and heart of this guy with music, but I tried! And had a great time doing it. My head explodes when I think about how Iâve had the opportunity to write scores for 5 films with @juddapatow and 3 with @mbonfiglio2000 in the last few years.

I moved to LA 10 years ago this month to try to write scores for movies with big orchestras. After making a few coffees and writing a few cues, it worked!

To spend two years writing fun, epic, silly and heartfelt music for this movie that is all of those things was a dream come true.

Thought Iâd take this opportunity say what an insane joy and privilege to have scored six Peanuts specials in the last few years.
Iâve recorded face-melting jazz flute, big band with some of the best horn players to ever do it, unbearably soulful harmonica, and orchestras in Berlin and Nashville. Of course this wouldnât be the Peanuts without my long-running collaboration with worldâs best piano trio: @jordanseigelmusic , @ryanshawdrums and Trey Henry. Iâve done over forty studio sessions with these guys!
All that and I got to work with the most thoughtful and open-minded directors @claykaytis and @raymondspersi
