A throwback to the music video I directed for @officialkeef and The X-Pensive Winos. “Hate It When You Leave” We just drove. That was the whole plan…get in and go, let the road do the rest. Two weeks. Down through the blues trails of Mississippi, deep and slow, where the air is thick with memory and the land itself seems to hum with everything that was ever felt, sung, and lost down here. All of it pulsing underneath us like a living thing. And somewhere in all that red dirt and open sky was the reason we came — human intimacy, that place where the soul brushes up against the world and you catch it if you’re fast enough. No casting calls. No location scouts. Just eyes open at sixty miles an hour, pulling over when something true presented itself. And it always did. The road knows. It has always known — carrying the myths, the wanderers, and the broken-hearted long before we ever pointed a camera out the window. Forever grateful to my team on this one…it wasn’t easy filming in the height of the pandemic. AGULHAS “Oupa” the whale, herald of the seas, returns to the bay. His songs unearth deep secrets from the heart of the ocean. To most in the village, the guttural whale cries remind them of time passing—of a certain season, and the opportunity it brings for the local fisherman. But for Angelo, a young boy who has inherited the gift of “sight” from his late grandfather, the haunting songs have a different meaning. When Angelo’s mother tells the tale of the relationship between Oupa and Pa, Angelo must choose between obeying his father’s wishes and listening to his grandfather’s voice in his heart. OVERBERG Overberg is a story about the seasons of life; their inevitable cycle. Just as the earth beneath Overberg experiences seasons: spring, summer, then fall, and finally winter— so does the soft-spoken old man who walks one last time amongst its rolling hills. As he gazes upon his youth across a harvest field, he dreams back and forth to what once was, with no fear of what is to come. Time slows; wisdom and youth are bound across an intangible, infinite time loop that exists within his mind. He stands across from the boy he once was—reflecting, remembering. Knowing. The wisdom in his eyes says it all. Winter is upon him. Set against the vast and wild expanse of British Columbia’s Hanson Island, NORTHERN RESIDENTS chronicles the decades-long journey of Paul Spong and Helena Symonds, who have devoted their lives to understanding and preserving one of Earth’s most mysterious and profound species: the Northern Resident orcas of the Pacific Northwest. In this sanctuary they call the @orcalabbc ,a network of hydrophones and remote cameras allows them to observe the orcas’ lives from afar, listening in on their unique, language-rich calls, the enduring tradition of family, and a social structure that, at its core, embodies the principles of peace and resilience. In the delicate, symphonic world of orcas, sound is everything. As Paul and Helena track the orcas’ movements year after year, they reveal families bound by unbreakable ties, where generations live, travel, and communicate together—each family distinguished by its own dialect, traditions, and calls passed from mother to offspring. It’s a harmony born of patience and respect, where conflicts are rare and community is paramount. Unlike humankind, the orcas know that survival depends on balance and cohesion within their pod, ignoring what they cannot control and focusing only on nurturing their own.The orcas offer us a mirror and a call to action. In their calls, Paul and Helena find not only the rhythms of nature but a blueprint for living, one that holds the power to reshape our world if only we have the courage to answer it. Through intimate glimpses into the orcas’ lives, NORTHERN RESIDENTS poses a question both simple and profound: Can we, as humans, learn to live as the orcas do, in symbiosis with each other and our environment, preserving the world for those who come after us? The film is currently in post production.

This photograph was taken during a location scout for my debut short film, OVERBERG, 2016 The project was shaped by a wonderful group of collaborators that was bound by curiosity and a shared desire to tell a story with care. The experience set me on the path of filmmaking. Not as a sudden revelation but as a slow undeniable pull. The work is rarely smooth sailing, long days, a lot of uncertainty, and compromises but it is a craft that engages every sense of my soul. With each project the vision deepens and the flame grows stronger with time. To all the artists and filmmakers out there, hang in there. Testing times, but we’ll push through. Watch OVERBERG at the link in my bio. 🌼🌼🌼

“If Rise feels so emotionally persuasive, it’s in large part due to its technical precision. Jacques Naudé’s cinematography gives the film its signature language: intimate close-ups during moments of vulnerability, patient wides that let the Zimbabwean landscape breathe, and kinetic camera movement during the fight sequences. The way Naude’s camera follows the body-first as Rise is beaten, later as he finds his rhythm in the ring —is more than choreography; it’s a physical expression of how a child learns to occupy space again. The boxing scenes are beautifully constructed, capturing both the brutality and the elegance of the sport. Zimbabwe’s colours-rust reds, deep greens, sun-drenched yellows-aren’t just aesthetic choices; they are emotional accents to a story that is, at its core, about reclaiming agency.” Joseph Jonathan @afrocritik It’s been incredibly inspiring to see the impact this film is making and I’m grateful to have played my part in bringing this powerful story to life. This project is a true testament to collaboration and trust. Bravo to our exceptional team, and to @jessiejrowlands for your vision and leadership. @rise.zimbabwe @joenjagu @misanharriman @panavisionofficial @mikolour
