Eight months ago, my great friend Ronnie Wideman kindly invited me to help design the on-court display for Tony Bennettās court dedication. It has been an absolute honor working with him on this project, and with this program for many years.
In true Tony Bennett fashion, he wanted to make sure that all within the basketball program received their credit. Even when the dedication should be all about him, he found a way to make it about others who helped the program along the way. Embedded within Coach Bennettās signature are the names of every student-athlete, coach, staff member, and manager from his time leading the program.
Saturday was incredible, and all of this still feels like a dream. Iāve been so blessed to work for such inspiring and thoughtful people here and I will never take a single second of it for granted.
If youāre still reading, I have a quick, personal, full-circle moment Iād love to share. My grandfather worked as security for UVA Athletics events for decades until his passing in October of 2019. After Ronnie had given me a call about the location of where the artwork will be located, I had to sit and reflect on all the wonderful ways God has impacted me. Unbeknownst to Ronnie and administration, the area on the floor where my grandfather used to stand for his job at John Paul Jones Arena just so happens to be the exact same location where Coach Bennettās signature, and his grandsonās name, will forever be. I hope to keep making him proud.
