A little poem for you about my corner of the world. The reactions to this year’s halftime show were overwhelmingly good, but the forced outrage from the right reinforced something that’s becoming more and more clear every day. There are people in our country who cannot stand to see the other cultures around them while they exist in one of the most culturally diverse countries on earth and are woven into the same tapestry as all the peoples that have built it. There has always been racism, xenophobia, hatred in this country, but the veil is getting thinner every day. We have a president that champions this rhetoric, and hundreds more in power that only seek to divide us. They’re sending us all to the same place. So remember, everyone waits in the line.
Call your senators and get ICE off our streets. Protest if you can, raise awareness, and VOTE. And give those files a read if you can stomach that kind of thing. By speaking my mind, I may now join the ranks of many other domestic t*rrorists, single mothers, and 5 year olds that seek to threaten our national security. But idc, I know what’s right. And for legal reasons this is satire. For all of my maga voters out there that means it’s funny. So relax.

I made this short documentary as my final project for my BFA program last year. Spending four days in the Florida wilderness with Shannon and her friends was a real trip, and the whole thing made me want to share real stories from real people for the rest of my life. A long time ago I watched a French documentary about bugs called Microcosmos (1996) that blew my mind. The people of France invented an entirely new type of camera to get these guys up close. I was enamored. I ordered a 30 dollar macro lens attachment off of Amazon and spent weeks walking around collecting bug shots. Everywhere I went were people who were excited to help me find bugs. At the springs, I told this couple what I was doing, and that I was really hoping to get a shot of a millipede. They ran up to me a few hours later to tell me there was a huge ass millipede like 10 minutes into the hiking trail, and walked me to it in the name of good photography. It’s the little things 🤷🏼♂️
