Ivana Matić’s series of delicate pyrographic drawings, in which the artist engages with the bean oracle (Serbian: falanje), a centuries-old practice rooted in the Balkan region. In this tradition, formations of beans are interpreted to find answers to future developments or existential questions.
The works are part of “Kopf, Herz, Schwelle“, a duo exhibition by Ivana Matić & Elpida Tsaousidis, on view until May 16.
We are open today from 12-4 pm…☕️

About 🫘
In her recent series “Kopf, Herz, Schwelle“ (2026), Ivana Matić draws on the Balkan bean oracle (falanje) – a centuries-old practice in which formations of beans are interpreted to address existential questions and possible futures.
The eight-part series presents different constellations of beans, symbolizing various life paths. It is based on the traditional 3×3 structure of the oracle: nine fields associated with different aspects of life – the head for thoughts and destiny, the heart for emotions and relationships, and the threshold for the material and the foundations of existence. Additional fields extend this system into further layers of interpretation.
Ivana Matić translates these structures into a reduced, concentrated visual language. Pale bean forms emerge from a dense network of burn marks, created through slow, repetitive gestures. Fine lines cover the surface, forming a vibrating texture from which the shapes appear like small islands of order within chance.
Rather than presenting the oracle as folklore or superstition, the works approach it as a cultural technique of meaning-making – situated between chance and structure, ritual and interpretation.
The labor-intensive, almost meditative process of pyrography reflects central aspects of Ivana Matić’s practice: repetition, concentration, and slowness, set against the speed of contemporary, digitally driven life.
Ivana Matić, born and raised in 1986 in Šabac, Serbia (formerly Yugoslavia), lives and works in Mainz. She studied fine arts and graduated in 2017 as a master student of Prof Andrea Büttner at Kunsthochschule Mainz.

About:
The exhibition brings together new works by Ivana Matić and Elpida Tsaousidis that deal with tradition and cultural patterns of interpretation. The focus is on how rituals, belief systems and superstition shape our perception – and how inner states and uncertainty manifest themselves in signs, patterns and images.
The exhibition takes its title from Ivana Matić’s latest series, “Kopf, Herz, Schwelle“ (2026). In delicate pyrographic drawings, she references the bean oracle rooted in the Balkan region – a centuries-old practice of interpreting formations and patterns made from beans in order to find answers to existential questions. Here, the oracle does not appear as an irrational source of inspiration, but as an interface between everyday life and transcendence. At a time when data-based algorithms calculate forecasts and model probability scenarios, traditional bean reading seems almost like a historical counterpart to the digital “oracle“ of our present.
Elpida Tsaousidis‘ work also moves within the tension between the visible and the invisible. Her photographs and drawings were created in a specific location – a clinic – and oscillate between documentation and subjective perception. Individual remnants of memory and dreamlike sequences condense into atmospheric pictorial spaces. Mysticism does not appear here as a religious postulate, but as an experience of the unspeakable – as a state between consciousness and unconsciousness.
While Ivana Matić depicts and examines traditional systems of order and symbols, Elpida translates the subjective perception of a highly emotional space into visual fragments.

IVANA MATIĆ & ELPIDA TSAOUSIDIS – Kopf, Herz, Schwelle
From 14 March to 16 May 2026, Emde Gallery is pleased to present the double exhibition “Kopf, Herz, Schwelle“ (Head, Heart, Threshold).
In delicate pyrographic drawings, she references the bean oracle rooted in the Balkan region – a centuries-old practice of interpreting formations and patterns made from bean seeds in order to find answers to existential questions. Here, the oracle does not appear as an irrational source of inspiration, but as an interface between everyday life and transcendence. At a time when data-based algorithms calculate forecasts and model probability scenarios, traditional bean reading seems almost like a historical counterpart to the digital “oracle“ of our present.

The VERNISSAGE will take place on Friday, 13 March 2026, from 6 to 8:30 pm – a date that subtly and humorously references the theme.
For the MIDISSAGE on 18 April 2026, the exhibition will be rehung: as with the renewed throwing of the beans, connections shift and meanings become newly legible.
