I'm tired of being afraid to be me.
Tuesday made it very clear to those in the LGBT+ community that no matter what is done to appease or blend in, this country will choose to fuck over the rights of marginalized communities so long as a convicted felon, rapist, sexist, racist bigot tells them they'll get 2¢ off per gallon at the gas pump.
This election has had severe ramifications already, with two of my friends ending their lives, and countless more seeking ways to get out before shit really hits the fan. The LGBT+ community has been made a scapegoat and strawman effigy for the past 40 years thanks to conservative fear mongering, and we fear the backsliding of our hard fought civil rights as a result. This election confirmed to many of us that this country at its core harbors a deep-seeded animosity towards people that are just trying to live their lives, and express their authentic selves. Its outcome is already being used as an excuse by those looking to do harm to marginalized and vulnerable communities, and will only embolden more brazen actions by people who feel that this result validates their heinous and repugnant views.
I have spent my entire life keeping this side of me in the shadows due to the fear of repression and rejection by my peers. After what I witnessed on Tuesday, I refuse to be silent any longer. I owe my lost friends and those that still fight that much.
I am a bisexual man, and I am incredibly proud of what the LGBT+ community has accomplished, is working for, and represents. I will continue to fight for our rights as LGBT+ Americans to be ourselves in spite of a county that hates us due to ignorance and bigotry. We are here, we will not back down in the face of hate and bigotry, and we will survive and thrive.
