Cognitive Reappraisal. Art - DEVIL IN THE NEXT ROOM
Cognitive Reappraisal is a thinking method used to regulate one’s emotions during a negative experience. Humor, finding the positives, and mindfulness are all reappraisal techniques used to do so. By asking yourself if there’s anything positive you can take from this experience, or if there is a possibility of a positive outcome you rebalance your emotional state limiting yourself from teetering too heavy on the negatives, or “catastrophizing” the event. This isn’t to ignore the negatives completely or to suppress them, only to look for another angle to approach an experience as a whole.
A 2024 Study by members of Harvards Department of Psychology found that when testing 431 young adults aged 18-25, there was a large crossover of participants who actively played sports and used cognitive reappraisal techniques in the last 3 months. It is unclear whether people prone to using more reappraisal techniques in their thinking are drawn to sports or if active sports participation creates more positive reappraisal thinking in its players. This to me however highlights the clarity that can be gained from shifting one’s thinking.

Synesthesia. Art - BURN
Synesthesia is a phenomenon that causes the stimulation of one sense to affect another. It appears in roughly 4% of the population and based on a 2017 study from UK’s Cambridge University it seems to be linked to a gene that can be passed down through relatives. Testing for music to color synesthesia seems to be easiest as of now, this is done by providing the participant with various sounds and songs and then searching for commonalities between their answers. Surprisingly, with music to color synesthesia the colors experienced from different sounds can range widely from person to person. It’s also worth noting that people who experience this usually experience more than one form of synesthesia. While many great artists claim to experience this it’s worth noting that this phenomena is not essential to great art, so if it’s something you haven’t experienced I wouldn’t feel left out.
