So it’s been a little while since I’ve been at my own studio. There are a lot of pros and cons from moving from a barbershop into my own space. Here are some of the things I’ve learned:
1. It’s all YOU. Everything. From putting it together and designing the way you want it to look, figuring out which booking site works best, etc. I find this to be a key because if you don’t like the way something is, you can simply change it. However, if anything goes wrong the only person to blame is yourself. Also, you have to have the discipline to get up and put the work in because if you don’t, who will 🤷🏾♂️
2. YOU WILL LOSE CUSTOMERS! The vibe is going to be different. There’s no “barbershop vibe” that some of the OGs love. No BS with other barbers. No shop talk or anything like that. A lot of people do like the privacy of not having a ton of people in the room at the same time as them. I’ve had a ton of clients who never really said much in a barbershop that now can’t stop talking
3. NO WALK-INS! This one is key. There won’t be many clients that just come for a walk-in like a barbershop. All the marketing is completely on you. You have to work for every single dollar that comes in. Having a steady clientele prior to opening a studio is key so you don’t have to worry about how you’re going to pay the bills.
