Meet Eugeniusz in his wonderful studio, an old cottage where he grew up.
He is a self taught artist, so unique and genuine. He loves simple countryside life, traditional customs, animals and you can see these all in his paintings and sculptures.
I adore his charming painting style, lovely colour combinations, delicate brushstrokes of his tiny flowers.
I am excited to bring some of his unique pieces back to London! Hand carved tree with birds, smiling horse, mini guinea fowls and my favourite hanging birds made from tree bark.
They are now available online.

Draby Śmigusne is an old custom, still practised on Easter Monday in Dobra village in Poland.
Word “draby” means “lads” and śmigusne refers to Smingus Dyngus day (Wet Monday), which happens on Easter Monday.
Men, dressed in plaited straw costumes, hats with ribbons and wearing masks would visit houses to cause some troubles. The costume symbolises fertility and rebirth of spring.
This view always takes my breath away.
Pająk in Kurpie means long stripes of twisted paper gathered in the middle of the room, symmetrically spread above the whole room.
Święty Kąt (Saint Corner) on the right with beautiful flat paper flowers flat bouquet, wooden statue of Pensive Christ with kierec hanging above made of peas adorned with paper flowers.
Paper curtain in the window, hand painted dowry chest. Embroidered cushions pilled neatly on a bed.
Freshly made, blessed Easter Palm made entirely from paper flowers. Probably, it will be kept here until the following year to protect the cottage from bad spirits and to bring good luck.
Cottage from Kadzidło village from the XIX century in the Kurpie Open Air Museum in Nowogród.
Abundance of paper flowers only in Kurpie 🌸🌺🌷🌻🌼🪻

Drowning of Marzanna is taking place today in Poland.
Marzanna is a Slavic godess who symbolizes a demon which is ritually burned and drowned.
This custom derives from pagan rituals, it celebrates the end of winter, the victory over death and the rebirth of spring.
Effigy of Marzanna is made of straw, dressed in colourful clothes and adorned with ribbons and necklaces. Traditionally the effigy has been carried past every house in the village by a group of children. During this procession Marzanna was repeatedly dipped in every puddle or stream. In the evening the effigy passed to the adults; the branches were lit, and then Marzanna was carried out of the village, burned, and thrown into water.
There were a number of superstitions like no one cannot touch the effigy once it's in the water or one's hand will wither. Another one is that looking back while returning home may cause an illness or death within the coming year.
This custom is still celebrated in Poland. I still remember my school trips with Marzanna to a nearby stream ❤️
We experienced the Drowning of Marzanna in 2024, during my Easter Kurpie Folk Excursion. It was such a memorable day to see kids bringing Marzanna they made together at school. Love their paper traditional folk costumes!
Always happy with Easter Palms. Palm Sunday is happening next weekend 🌷
And it’s been such a gorgeous day celebrating Spring Equinox today 🌼
