There’s something about a traditional West Javanese wedding that modern life could never replace.
The stillness before the ceremony.
The scent of jasmine woven into every detail.
The way an entire family shows up — not just to witness a marriage, but to carry generations of tradition forward together.
This weekend, our family gathered for my beautiful cousin Maya’s wedding, and I felt overwhelmingly proud to be Sundanese, Indonesian. 🇮🇩
In a world moving so fast, where traditions are often softened or forgotten, there was something deeply emotional about seeing every part of our culture still honoured with love and intention.
From the kebayas and batik, to the siraman, blessings, sawer, jasmine crowns, prayers, food, music, and the sacred moment of handing over both bride and groom into each other’s families… every detail carried meaning.
And perhaps that’s what I love most about Javanese culture.
The values. The softness. The respect for elders. The gentleness in the way we speak to one another.
The understanding that marriage is never just about two people — it is about family, community, ancestry, and prayer.
One of the most emotional moments was watching Eko’s parents give their blessings. Maya’s Mum, my aunt Sumi, tearing up as she married off her youngest daughter after raising three girls as a single mother.
The groom’s father unable to hold back his tears. And suddenly, you realise weddings are not just celebrations of love — they are also celebrations of sacrifice, resilience, and parenthood.
And then came sawer — one of my favourite West Javanese traditions. Rice, coins, sweets and blessings showered onto the bride, groom, and guests. A symbol of abundance, generosity, prosperity, and sharing joy with everyone around you.
It’s chaotic, 🙈but beautiful, emotional, and deeply symbolic all at once. Just like family.
These are the moments that remind me who we are. Where we come from.
And why family and traditions matter.
Selamat sekali lagi yah Maya & Eko.
