Step Back Sunday
Timeline and some stills from a doc for RedBull’s collegiate Valorant tournament, Campus Clutch. What a whirlwind this cut was. Finished shooting on a Friday, rough was out by Tuesday. While my back has finally healed from all those hours in the chair, I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Back in 2009, I made a deal with my mom that if I did well enough in school and combined birthday and Christmas gifts, she would help me out with a laptop and Final Cut Express 4. It was a HUGE ask, but I’m forever grateful that she saw the potential in me and that this wasn’t just another hobby. While I moved on from Final Cut a few years ago, I still think back to learning, experimenting, collaborating, and finding a style. Those were some of my most fun moments in my teenage years. Fourteen years later, I’m proud to say that I still have that giddiness whenever there’s a new project that comes across my desk.

To me, fresh dailies are like a batch of chocolate chip cookies coming out of the oven. There’s this warm fuzzy feeling that compels you to enjoy a warm beverage and comfy pants. Metaphors aside, screening dailies is one of my favorite aspects of the editing process.

Dailies is where the magic is found. It’s where you find that drone shot that wows your client, the take that makes your talent look best, setting up match cuts, a pensive look, a genuine smile: all of these satisfy that creative itch, but for me it’s the unexpected. What sits me up straight in my chair (something I need to be better about) is when I find a shot that’s mundane on its own, but put in context gives your story that extra sauce. That little “ooooo” moment. I can feel my heart pumping as I write this. Every shot means something, you just have to find it.

Like a good chocolate chip cookie recipe, there are no shortcuts to screening the dailies. Screening every frame of picture and sound is imperative to carving the best story possible. Without viewing everything, you may be leaving the most compelling moments on the cutting room floor. That’s a disservice to you, your client, and ultimately your viewer.
