Part of my grief process lately has been appreciating the 6 months I’ve lived without my dad as equally as the 30 years I lived with him... being able to feel so much joy, love, and community alongside the grief, letting each of those feelings have the space they need without telling another they have no room in my life is the proof I need to believe that my life didn’t end when his did. The joy and love I shared with him didn’t go away, I am an extension of it now. The care for community he had didn’t cease to exist. It had to go somewhere and I like to think it just came back to me.
I took a lot of great photos of these feelings this summer. Especially the thirst trap.
I miss my dad like an ocean
but my grief is just a drop in a collective feeling
I long for him like the children of Palestine whose fathers I've seen martyred in videos across the internet
and the children of undocumented fathers who still exist on this earth but far away and separate from their kids
losing moments in time and chances to take photos together... my grief is not simple, my grief is shared
