Celebrating @carralynnlindsay entering her 4th decade and a whistle stop trip round Ireland. Eating cake in the rain. Wild roads. Driving for hours to find the really, really good coffee. Iconic beaches. Beaches with sheep. Super blue moon. Splitting the G. Life changing gravy. Laughs with pals down the pub. Old stones, part pagan part Christian. The world’s second oldest lighthouse. Grumpy dogs. And the small matter of @jaynepatt and @andrewdoorbell ’s fabulous wedding.
🏰 🚣♂️ Warkworth and Amble pt 1 🚣♂️🏰
Warkworth Castle is a medieval fortress in a loop of the River Coquet, built by the powerful Percy family, Earls (and later Dukes) of Northumberland. Though the castle we see today dates to the 14th century there has almost certainly been a fortification at Warkworth at least as early as the Iron Age. There was a high-status residence here by the 9th century when Osbert, King of Northumbria, gave the estate to the Earls of Northumbria.
It was probably in a poor state by 1174 when William the Lion of Scotland captured Warkworth and slew the inhabitants. It was not until 1199 that Robert fitz Roger rebuilt the castle in grand style. Fitz Roger did not stint; he laid out the imposing stone fortress we see today, with a strong gatehouse defending a curtain wall.
Warkworth Castle played a major role as a border fortress in the Scottish Wars of Independence in the early 14th century, when Scottish raiders struck deep into English territory. The castle was besieged in 1327 and the Scots returned to burn the town in 1341.
There’s also a cheeky shot of Amble pier at the end. Insta wouldn’t allow me to upload the full edit so pt 2 will be up later this week.

Tanfield railway is believed to be the worlds oldest working railway, first opened in 1725 and was primarily used to transport coal from the collieries along to the river Tyne. The railway played a vital role in the Industrial Revolution and continued to operate until the 1960s. In the 1980, a group of railway enthusiasts decided to restore the railway and it’s been operating as a heritage site and living museum ever since. Visitors can ride the steam railway, pulled by the steam locomotive and see what it was like to travel during the Industrial Revolution.
The Causey Arch, which spans the gorge next to the railway line is the oldest surviving single arch railway bridge anywhere in the world. It spans 100 feet and is 80 feet above the ground. It played a significant role in the development of railways, and has become a symbol of the northeast’s industrial heritage. It is 75 years older than the first steam loco and 100 years older than the Stockton - Darlington railway.

🧨 Blast Beach, near Seaham in County Durham, feels like an alien planet.
🩸 Surreal, blood red and yellow-oxide coloured pools stain the sand, with the vibrant colours coming from the remains of iron ore.
🏭 Back in the day, the surrounding area had some of the largest collieries in Europe, and the beach became a dumping ground for colliery spoil - with 2.5 million tonnes being dumped every year, hiding the sand under 10 meters of waste. Following a century of waste dumping, the pollution went 7km out to sea. When the colliery closed, the beaches were just a blackened mess.
👽 The black, coal-laden beach featured in Alien 3 due to its other-worldly, surrealistic and post-industrial characteristics.
🪨 Nowadays, Blast Beach is known for its industrial heritage, but also its unique geological features, including cliffs made of consolidated sand dunes and magnesium limestone cliffs and striking rock formations created by centuries of erosion. There’s also WWII era pillbox for anti-aircraft guns to protect the North East during the war.
🍃 Thanks to the 'Turning the Tide' effort, Blast Beach has been transformed into an out-of-this-world destination managed by the @nationaltrust .
🚀 @carralynnlindsay and I visited here over the weekend and I've got heaps more footage to edit from this trip! Keep an eye out for more of Blast Beach...
