In light of everything that’s been going on, I think it’s an important time to remind the art community that this community, and these institutions that we tout and support are built on the backs of black artists and POC artists. Art is a radical system. Art is touted as the voice of the oppressed, but not acknowledged in white circles unless it’s conveniently tied to white profit. As white artists, we are complicit in a system of oppression that profits off of these artists while excluding them from the art community. It’s not enough for you share pieces of art made by black artists about black suffering with a couple kind words. White people and non-black POC: If you’re not actively trying to magnify black voices and fight for justice and their inclusion, YOU ARE COMPLICIT. If you are silent about black suffering unless it’s in your art history essay YOU ARE COMPLICIT. If you are not actively educating yourself on black art, and acknowledging only pieces about black suffering YOU ARE COMPLICIT. If you are not using your platform, your art accounts, your classrooms, your gallery nights, your collectives to illuminate disenfranchisement, the theft of black art, and violence beget by police brutality and white supremacy, YOU ARE COMPLICIT. Black art and the black community are not a stepping stone, they are the foundation of the art community. If you consider yourself an artist, use your platform to acknowledge racial injustice. Educate yourself, your ignorance is not for black shoulders to bear. Your silence is deafening. Your silence is seen and it’s disappointing. Hold art institutions, museums, and schools accountable to speak about the violence towards artists whose art they have stolen. You are responsible for holding other artists accountable. Art is not apolitical. It’s your responsibility to disentangle your identity from white dominant art circles. Listen to the black community, listen to black artists. It’s not hard to figure out how use your privilege to amplify the voices of the black community. You are being held accountable for the action or inaction you are taking right now. #blm #justiceforgeorgefloyd #blacklivesmatter #georgefloyd
