Weeks posts
We will be collaborating with the Sustainable Nutrition Academy at the Living Centre in Kings Cross as part of their COP 29 2-week Series. Featuring composting, materials from hospitality waste and conversation around their mission to transform the hospitality industry’s relationship with waste, taking what would otherwise have been incinerated or thrown in landfill and giving it a second lease of life, implementing these materials in a circular economy that benefits our communities. COP 29 2-week Series @ STCA, Nov9 to Nov 22 - The Somers Town Community Association (STCA) is hosting two weeks’ worth of free, open-to-all workshops / activities / sessions in partnership with different individuals and organisations to inspire and encourage ideas, conversations and hope around community and climate. Light snacks and drinks to be provided. To see the list of events that will be running and register for them and more information, please see link: https://shorturl.at/NtHMD

Lockdown Book Club No 6 Radical Matter: Kate Franklin and Caroline Till 2018 Featuring many emerging niches of reclamation design and other emerging practices, Living Materials, Future Mining, Co-Creation, Waste as Raw Material and our favourite Shit, Hair, Dust - Radical Matter is a survey of contemporary design led materials practice. It’s a little bit ‘how to’ a little bit ‘who does’ and a little bit ‘why should I’. Rather than take the approach of many high end design books, simple surveys of pretty objects, Radical Matter puts the work in context of the conversations around us, the anthropocene, ‘growth’ framed by materials rather GDP, and our growing understanding that there is no planet 2*. Radical Matter also operates as a very pretty coffee table book, elegantly laid out, easy to understand and full of pretty pictures of exotic objects, machines and processes. Why is this relevant? Many of the approaches seen here, exploring the familiar and the discarded, craft merging with digital practice, nose to tail design practice, will be inspirational for those outside of making, design and and craft. * A subject which might well be debated by those investing in the emerging field of asteroid mining. #Lockdownbookclub #lockdown #biodesign #biotech #GreenNewDeal #fourthIndustrialRevolution #materials #design #asteroidmining #craft #biomaterials Bored during lockdown? Lockdown Book Club No 5 Enzymes: A Very Short Introduction Paul Engel 2020 Have you seen those news stories that say ’scientists discover amazing material that eats plastic’ you’ll usually find that that miracle ‘material is an enzyme or a bacteria. Enzymes are the tiny, astonishing molecular machines that make life possible. These proteins speed up chemical reactions inside a living organism many millionfold. Working together, teams of enzymes carry out all the processes that collectively we recognize as life, from making DNA to digesting food. All over the planet, in universities and in the R&D departments of major corporations you’ll find teams working with enzymes on whats being called “Enzymatic Recycling’ new ways of taking back plastic and textiles to their raw materials for reuse. These and other applications have huge potential to create a more sustainable world. Why is this relevant? Not a scientist but want to get a broad understanding of what is going on with emerging material science? Dig into something like this and try and get an understanding of the language, terms and concepts around emerging processes. Perhaps you won’t understand everything, but you will get some insight into how these innovations work. #Lockdownbookclub #lockdown #biodesign #biotech #GreenNewDeal #asteroidMining #Elon Musk #fourthIndustrialRevolution #orwell Bored during lockdown? Lockdown Book Club No 4⠀ ⠀ ⠀ The Ministry of Truth: A Biography of George Orwell's 1984⠀ Dorian Lynskey 2019⠀ ⠀ A biography of the book, the writing of the book, Orwell’s influences from past visions of utopias and dystopias, as well as the cultural and real world legacy of one of the most ‘important’ works of the 20th century.⠀ ⠀ Lynskey’s background as a writer about pop music means he is happy to trawl far and wide through the ephemera of Orwell’s life and reading. Big Brother, Doublethink, Newspeak and those other over familiar terms are all rooted in Orwell’s experience as a cog in the BBC’s war reporting, during the Spanish Civil war, as a policeman for the British Empire and as a thorn in the side of the contemporary Labour party.⠀ ⠀ Carving out details of obscure tracts that both inspired Orwell and formed the time he was a part of, the book is an incredible insight into the thinking and creativity of a unique mind. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ Why is this relevant? The book itself went in and out of fashion during the 20th century both with the left and right. It sits at the centre of that century as it resonates in ours.⠀ ⠀ #Lockdownbookclub #lockdown #biodesign #biotech #GreenNewDeal #asteroidMining #Elon Musk #fourthIndustrialRevolution #orwell⠀ ⠀ Bored during lockdown? New ‘Growth’ Mindset⠀ ⠀ Dutch Design Week talks now available on our Vimeo channel. Link in bio⠀ ⠀ One of the major revolutions in materials innovation has been both the adoption of biological material as an alternative to petrochemicals and extractive minerals, and bolder still, the concept of ‘programming’ living matter like bacteria and yeast into growing into material-on-demand. ⠀ ⠀ In nature there is no ‘waste’ so how can we turn ‘waste’ streams into sources of material abundance that provide legitimate alternatives to raw material? How can we ethically manage our relationships with microorganisms (and create new ones)? How can we learn from nature to revolutionise how industry’s ‘make’? ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ Featured designers:⠀ ⠀ The Living Factory by Sarah Graham ⠀ Crafting organic waste for fashion by Riina Oun ⠀ Violet by Moenika Chowdury ⠀ Ostra by Jade Echard ⠀ Biomimicking Strength by Carolina Perez Leon ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ Biotours present a virtual pop-up studio and lunchtime briefing series featuring 16 enterprising and attuned graduate designers shaping industry-shifting applications in biodesign, biotechnology, circularity and sustainability.⠀ ⠀ The Biotours experience will offer immersive and critical insight, inspiration and imagination around four macro areas of opportunity: Bio-Tech Realities, (Local) Systems Solutions, The New ‘Growth’ Mindset and Augmented Humans.⠀ ⠀ Produced by Bud Moore and Becky Lyon ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ #heyddw #biodesign #regeneration #circular #sustainability #syntheticbiology #biotechnology #sustain #greennewdeal #sdg #trends #insight #strategy #agency

Lockdown Book Club No 3⠀ ⠀ ⠀ Fully Automated Luxury Communism - a Manifesto⠀ Aaron Bastani 2019⠀ ⠀ Deserving of many awards based on the title alone Bassani’s book tries to weave together many of the disparate strands of what is loosely termed the fourth industrial revolution AI, Robotics, the Internet of Things, Asteroid Mining, Synthetic Biology and much more.⠀ ⠀ Hardly lacking in ambition the book has its faults, possibly many of the innovations are now so embedded in our daily lives that they don’t seem like innovations at all, and he does seem in thrall to some to some of the uber capitalists the title would seem to be critical of.⠀ ⠀ Where the book really comes into its own is with the call for some kind of mediated equilibrium between technology and society, an understanding that technology is a weapon, a blanket a tool, or some medicine and we have a responsibility to manage that relationship for our species and the planet. ⠀ ⠀ Why is this relevant? Although many of the stories and anecdotes are familiar from tech reporting and broader media they are gathered together to propose a genuinely possible and viable future.⠀ ⠀ #Lockdownbookclub #lockdown #biodesign #biotech #GreenNewDeal #asteroidMining #Elon Musk #fourthIndustrialRevolution ⠀ ⠀ Bored during lockdown? Lockdown Book Club No 2⠀ ⠀ ⠀ Biomimicry Innovation Inspired by Nature⠀ Janine M. Benyus 1997⠀ ⠀ Biomimicry or as some prefer Biomimesis is the concept that we can use the systems, designs and materials of nature for both inspiration and application. Simply put we can use the 3.8 billion years of life on Earth as a database for future innovation, ideas and motivation.⠀ ⠀ Originally published nearly a quarter of a century ago Benyus’s book has become one of the key touchstones of this approach. Some may find the language a little folksy, but all of these sometimes disparate ideas come through powerfully.⠀ ⠀ Laid out with a series of How will we? chapters, she sets out a template for what would these days be called the ‘bieconomy’ covering areas from computing to medicine to energy and nutrition.⠀ ⠀ Why is this relevant? Many of the ideas in this book are just beginning to seem like a way we might be able to shape the world for the rest of this century and into the future.⠀ ⠀ #Lockdownbookclub #lockdown #biodesign #biotech #GreenNewDeal⠀ ⠀ Bored during lockdown? Bio-Tech Realities⠀ ⠀ Dutch Design Week talks now available on our Vimeo Channel. Link in bio⠀ ⠀ How might we bring the merger of biology and technology closer into contact with our everyday lives? How might it help us rethink what we perceive as ‘biologic’ or ‘technologic’ products? What are the systems-scale applications of this frontier technology?⠀ ⠀ Featured designers:⠀ ⠀ AI For Healthy Buildings by Tom Pais ⠀ Symbiotic Futures by Romy Snijders⠀ Transmitting nature - the Earth’s first words by Sean T Ross⠀ ⠀ Biotours present a virtual pop-up studio and lunchtime briefing series featuring 16 enterprising and attuned graduate designers shaping industry-shifting applications in biodesign, biotechnology, circularity and sustainability.⠀ ⠀ The Biotours experience will offer immersive and critical insight, inspiration and imagination around four macro areas of opportunity: Bio-Tech Realities, (Local) Systems Solutions, The New ‘Growth’ Mindset and Augmented Humans.⠀ ⠀ Produced by Bud Moore and Becky Lyon @elastic_fiction ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ #heyddw #biodesign #regeneration #circular #sustainability #syntheticbiology #biotechnology #sustain #greennewdeal #sdg #trends #insight #strategy #agency

Lockdown Book Club No 1⠀ ⠀ American Moonshot: John F. Kennedy and the Great Space Race⠀ Douglas Brinkley 2019⠀ ⠀ This isn’t the story of the ‘Right Stuff’ the rugged American individuals who beat the odds and the Russians to the Moon, no this is the story of the backroom deals, compromises, former Nazi rocket scientists, cold war paranoia and dogs in space.⠀ ⠀ Against the backdrop of the Vietnam War and the Civil Rights Movement the United States managed one of humanity’s greatest achievements, a feat of engineering and imagination.⠀ ⠀ Douglas Brinkley is Katherine Tsanoff Brown Chair in Humanities and professor of history at Rice University, Texas. Rice University was the location of John Kennedy’s "We choose to go to the Moon" speech in September 1962.⠀ ⠀ Why is this relevant? Perhaps because the Moonshot required the combination of political will and the desire to push at the edges of available technology. Something we desperately need to solve the Climate Crisis. This is not the ‘Moonshot’ as silly metaphor, but rather as guide book.⠀ ⠀ #Lockdownbookclub #space #lockdown #biodesign #biotech⠀ ⠀ ⠀ Bored during lockdown?
