What does rebellion look like in a household where your parents post your most vulnerable moments online?
At the end 2024 California finally passed 2 laws addressing the vulnerability and exploitation of children in influencer families. AB 1880 (Coogan’s Law expansion) and SB 764 (Child Content Creator Rights Act) both ensure financial protection for minors appearing in online content, setting aside a portion of their earnings into a protected trust fund. They came into effect January 2025, nearly 20 years after the birth of YouTube.
However, financial exploitation is not the only threat facing children in online videos. Shari Franke, daughter of Ruby Franke (family influencer convicted of child abuse and now serving up to 15 years in prison), has been speaking out to lawmakers in hopes of getting more bills passed to protect minors.
Shari states that growing up under the “constant surveillance” was “excruciating”. She’s quoted with saying “there is no such thing as a moral and ethical family vlogger”.
As of right now, there are no laws in Canada protecting child performers in social media content.

Last year I got to make my first big project out of school. There were a lot of moments of doubt throughout prep and I often felt like scrapping it. I was cut from crazy 8s after the top 40, key members had to drop out, I never found a producer and my living situation was up in the air. I am so lucky to be surrounded by so many talented filmmakers in my life but it’s intimidating putting yourself out there knowing how much talent is around you while facing your own challenges. It didn’t feel right to give up and let all the people down who helped me get here though.
I am so grateful to everyone who helped me make it happen whether they were a part of the team or just someone in my life encouraging me along the way. Thank you.
As many of you know, this project has been done for awhile and I’ve been sitting on it. As much as I felt such a wave of creative energy making this thing, many elements of the story are very personal and I was not ready to face the feelings that come with that after seeing the final export. I have also struggled raising the funds necessary for festival distribution and unfortunately it looks like it’ll still be a little bit longer before we see NO BYSTANDERS on the big screen. However, I don’t believe in giving up and I wanted to put something out there for everyone in the meantime.
No matter what happens just keep showing up.
