Meet Carly one of CCR's Poetry Editors! They work incredibly hard writing and reading 50 years of poetry!
Why are you involved with CCR?
Looking behind the curtain of a literary magazine is thrilling. CCR is a complicated machine run by a group of skilled, hard-working individuals who have their hands full with plenty of other work. It's an honor to be on the team and I've enjoyed reading an absolute mountain of poetry.
What drives you as a writer/artist?
When I was a lot younger, I was anxious to be remembered. Now, I just hope to create moments of resonance and connection for people who read my work.
What is a "niche" subject you never get a chance to talk about and really want to?
I am an evangelical fan of many bands in the Elephant 6 Collective. The Athens, GA and Denver, CO-based music scene produced big names like Neutral Milk Hotel and of Montreal, but also has gems like the Olivia Tremor Control, the Apples in Stereo, and dozens of lesser-known artists. These musicians are not only talented, innovative, and interesting, but also genuinely kind and generous people who have welcomed me as an artist and writer at every opportunity. The documentary The Elephant 6 Recording Co. is a great entry point.
We convinced my dad to let us name her Indy because she was born two days after Independence Day in 2012. We took her home in a candy bar box between my brother and I’s seats in the Honda Odyssey after a family trip out West. Truthfully, we wanted to name her Indy because that’s what Indiana Jones’s childhood dog was named (and what he named himself after). She was needy, she had too much skin for her body, she dove headfirst into any muddy creek bed she could find, and she made my Chevy S10 smell awful because she’d go swimming and then lay on the seat. Ella once brought her to high school with us, and she loved being the center of attention for dozens of bored teenagers. She loved nearly everyone she met, and would follow my dad’s scent for miles through the woods just to say hi while he was hunting. Sleep well, Indygirl.
how your email finds me (made it to every day of summerfest, saw plenty other shows, got published, launched a diy record label, watched the first of my generation in my family get married, moved out of my first solo apartment, deleted spotify, etc.)
get me out of god’s country (one week in SLC grading AP papers! i enjoyed myself very much except for the part where i tried to get one of their special weird sodas and the universe soda-blocked me)
i have been living a vibrant, bonkers, and extraordinary life the last few months. been to so many shows, seen many films, traveled through so many states, had some great times and wonderful company. we live in dreadful & sorrowful times but i will not let the horrors make my life miserable; i will recognize and accommodate my sorrow; i owe that much to the people who do not have the option to live a good life.
