OOIOO has always created a musical language all its own. Under the leadership of YoshimiO @emeraldragonfly a founding member of Boredoms, the group has recorded music that have subverted expectations and warped perceptions of what constitutes pop and experimental music.
OOIOO began as a fictitious band for a photo shoot for Switch magazine in 1996. The all-female four-piece ensemble includes Yoshimi, guitarist Kayan, bassist Aya and Ritsuko Mishina on drums. The band quickly gained attention by being the opening act for @sonicyouth_official in 1997. While the band’s tours of the United States are infrequent, they are as the New York Times has stated, transcendent - taking their love of indigenous music into an entirely new dimension by freely weaving organic and electric tones into a vivid tapestry, employing their keen sense of color and texture.
OOIOO's music is constantly evolving from release to release, from one band to another. Intense performers and creators, drawing from a wide range of influences, the band has invented a heartfelt musical language that is eclectic yet accessible and completely their own - dense and frantic. OOIOO has always been the best outlet from YoshimiO to articulate her unique talents and swirling, dreamy tunes.

OOIOO are YoshimiO, Mishina, kAyAn, and AYA.
OOIOO was founded by YoshimiO in 1995. The members came together as musicians who move freely between the audible and inaudible, rhythm and non-rhythm, noise and silence. The music they create is a collection of the moments and essence of their favorite sounds that they captured, as they come into being until they disappear into the ether. Just as each cell in the body consists of a microcosm of its own, the vibrations of each of the members resonate together to create a new life form.
