The devil hates to see you happy and succeeding.👿 To the person who smashed my windshield this weekend; you didn’t break me. I’m pivoting and moving in another direction. You were probably having a bad day and that’s fine but you let the devil use you and I am not ok with that. I hope you deal with whatever issues you have and seek God. My windshield will be replaced tomorrow. It is material and does not dictate how I move. It may have set me back but the come up will be so worth it!!! Imma be back in no time. My husband reassured me yesterday that nothing and no one will stop what God has for me. It’s already written. 🙏🏾 I am so thankful to be of sound mind and body and get through the stressors of life. Thankful for my village who constantly lift me up. With God, everything is possible 🙏🏾🙌🏾 A while back, I saw a post in one of my costume groups about applying for the costume production program at UNC. I doubted that I had what it took to get in to UNC, much less a program so known for its work, even though I had the resume and portfolio to prove I know what I am doing as a creative. With the support of my mother Evette Burton-Hunt and my father Todd D. Sanders, I applied. When I received a notification that the director of the program wanted me to present my portfolio, I was so anxious and excited. The doors were opening for me and God was giving me what I prayed for: a way to step in to my purpose so that NOBODY could deny me and my work. When they sent me over the official acceptance letter a few days after my presentation, I cried like a baby. THIS moment is what I have been waiting for It’s the relief of finally being seen. I’ve waited for this chance to grow under mentors who truly believe in me. I am officially a UNC Tarheel graduate student! 🩵🤍 I start my Master’s degree in costume production in August 2026. No one loves me more than I do… This work is the only thing that gets me. It consumes me. It loves me. It nurtures me. It consoles me. It shows me gratitude. It gives just as much as it takes. It listens. It changes me for the better. It doesn’t doubt me. It understands me. It is present. It is not conditional. I am my work and my work is me. This year has been very tough. I have tried my best to keep a level head and focus on what matters most to me. I have worked my ass off to get to that next level without having to worry about how I am going to get there. 🎥 VIEWS This shot was from the most recent commercial I worked on. I always get a pic of the set when I’m working so I can use it in my portfolio but also so I can put things back where I got them. Most times we are renting out people’s businesses and homes and I either use or move items that are already there and incorporate some of my own pieces to create a set. It’s important to respect the space we are in and the things in them (it’s also common sense) by putting the area back in place before we leave. Grabbing a before shot makes that super simple. Adding to my resume is crucial to me getting on a level where I am on that main stage accepting awards for my work! I have to build my reputation as a art director, I have to show I can be a costume designer/stylist, I have to show up and out for a set design. I’m not out here faking the funk, I’m putting in the work. It’s hard and frustrating at times but I know it will all work out. I will reach my goal no matter what. I was made for this. ✌🏾 This was a commercial for EV cars. There were 3 cars total and 5 talent booked. That means I had 3 different looks for 3 different sets with all 3 of them having props I had to provide for the actors to use and interact with (I only got bts of 2 of the sets 🫠). Things that make costumers happy? BUTTONS!😂 During my stint in theatre, I met Miriam who ran @durhamsavoyardsltd costumes house. She had everything in labeled bins, pictured in a binder, hung on labeled rolling racks… the WORKS! I was so happy to be in that space and be able to learn from her. She was very bubbly and welcoming; a light on my path. This behind the scenes video was her showing me items she had available for a play I was doing. I was able to pull items to use for the show, use her notions and sewing patterns, basically she gave me run of the place. I did an alteration for @fitmisscoco before her competition last year! She was so bubbly and excited to wear her suit but it needed minor alterations so it would sit and fit just right. She hit me up and I invited her over for a quick fitting. With a quick turnaround, she was able to get her suit and was happy with the results! I loved the color of her suit! Being adaptable to me means being able to change pace at the drop of a hat and accomplish a side task so that you can move on to bigger tasks. During my first outdoor theatre show, we had moved to our 2nd show venue and one of the actors had ripped a hole in their costumes. It was such a minor thing but I stopped what I was doing (I was also on set decoration/props) and whipped out my handy dandy travel sewing kit and got to work. It only took me a minute or 2 to close the hole but in that moment, I was able to relax, revel in the accomplishment of the first 3 shows and think about how I was going to execute my show To-Do list. In that moment, I was able to truly focus on the now. It’s so hard not to worry about the future of my career because I aim to be amazing. I want to see my work on the silver screen and on the big stage. I put my all in to my work, no matter how big or little the task. When you are supposed to be cleaning but you find something to play with!!! 😩😩😩 My husband would be the best person to tell you that I have severe A.D.D. (self diagnosed of course) and when I go to do something, there are 10 other things that pop in my head to do and I get MAJORLY side tracked. It helps when I have a written To-Do list so I don’t stray from my tasks just because I saw a shiny thing in all the fray of my storage unit😅 *I have had this hoop-skirt for yeeeaarrss and still don’t know what to do with it* My creative brain goes 1000 x a minute 🧠 Posting is hard for me because I absolutely hoard pictures and video. Last year, I accidentally deleted a year’s worth of work in pics and videos I didn’t post yet. I was devastated. Now I am seeing it was probably for the best. Challenging myself to go beyond what I know and learn new things makes it all worth it in the end. This alteration was for the stage play “OR” by Liz Duffy Adams. It was my first time doing anything with period piece clothing and quick changes. I went with what I knew, watched a few videos on YouTube and got to work. I got so many compliments on my choices and how everything fit and how seamlessly the changes went.
