This is our proposal to the Atlanta Legacy Makers - Woodruff Park competition. In collaboration with Kamau Patton @kamaupatton we wanted to create a design that encapsulated Dr.Kings idea of the beloved community. A place where people could freely sit, reflect and speak to one another. Especially with what has transpired in the past week, this is something I believe is needed in this country.
The idea was to take the main pedestrian routes, Peachtree St. historically an affluent white community and Auburn Ave historically a disenfranchised black community and funnel them into this chasm. Separated from the cacophony produced by city traffic, it would allow participants to sit, reflect and be amongst one another.
The sculpture designed by Kamau Patton, is an abstraction of Dr. King’s pulpit. With its gradation of texture and facing towards DC. Signifying the arduous yet worthwhile journey towards civil rights, and the journey we must never forget.
The ALTER uses folding and cardboard joinery techniques to transform a four sided piece of cardboard into a multifaceted piece of furniture using only four simple steps.
