In April 1917, the Battle of Vimy Ridge marked the first time all four divisions of the Canadian Corps fought together as a unified force. Tasked with capturing a heavily fortified German position in northern France, 100,000 Canadians moved forward with a strategy built on meticulous planning and technical innovation. By advancing under a coordinated creeping artillery barrage, they succeeded where previous assaults had stalled, securing the ridge in just a few days. This victory came at a significant cost: 3,600 Canadians killed and 7,000 wounded. Beyond the military achievement, Vimy remains a defining chapter in Canada’s history—a moment when the country began to assert its own identity and capabilities on the world stage. Today, the Canadian National Vimy Memorial stands at Hill 145, the ridge’s highest point. It serves as a permanent testament to the service, sacrifice, and courage of the Canadians who fought there 109 years ago. — On assignment with 39 Canadian Brigade Group documenting the Canadian Scottish Regiment’s battlefield tours. On April 22, 1915, during the Second Battle of Ypres, Canadian troops faced a harrowing challenge. Following the first-ever large-scale poison gas attack in history, a critical gap opened in the Allied lines. With the fate of the front hanging in the balance, two Canadian battalions—the 10th Battalion (Calgary Highlanders) and the 16th Battalion (Canadian Scottish)—were ordered to counter-attack and retake a crucial position: Kitchener’s Wood. This wasn’t a grand, strategic offensive, but a desperate, close-quarters fight in a dense oak plantation. In the darkness and chaos, without artillery support, these soldiers advanced into the unknown, facing fierce German resistance. Their objective was simple: plug the dangerous hole in the line and prevent a complete German breakthrough towards Ypres. Though not officially recognized as a battle honour, the courage and sacrifice displayed at Kitchener’s Wood were immense. The cost, however, was staggering: the two battalions suffered over 75% casualties in the assault. The tenacious actions of the 10th and 16th Battalions bought precious time, stabilized the front, and ultimately helped prevent a catastrophic collapse of the Allied defenses. For their extraordinary heroism, the Canadian Scottish Regiment was awarded the unique Oak Leaf honorary distinction, a symbol proudly worn to this day. It’s a powerful reminder of their unwavering resolve and the pivotal role they played in one of the most desperate moments of the First World War. — On assignment with @39cbg.39gbc documenting the Canadian Scottish Regiment’s battlefield tours. Earlier this year, I travelled to France with the 39 Brigade Public Affairs team to document burial of Lt. Francis Henry Hemsley. A soldier of the First World War, Lt. Hemsley was one of 2,000 Canadians killed in August 1917 amongst heavy fighting on Hill 70 near the French city of Lens. The violence of that battle reshaped the land so completely that the identities of both friend and foe were lost for decades. Over a century later, his remains were uncovered during a construction project. Through DNA analysis, the Canadian Casualty Identification Program was able to identify Lt. Hemsley and notify his family. On the cool, windy morning of April 28, 2025, he was laid to rest with full military honours at the Loos British Cemetery. His grandson Richard, extended family, and representatives from the Canadian government stood witness as a century-old chapter quietly closed. _ Public Affairs team: @39cbg.39gbc PAO & copywriter: Captain Graeme Kaine, 39 CBG Videographer: Corporal Kelly-Ann Lepage, Combat Camera

Sunset over Ypres from the Hill 62 Memorial with the Canadian Scottish Regiment. The Canadian Memorial at Hill 62 honours the sacrifice of Canadian soldiers who fought to hold the last Allied-held ground near Ypres, Belgium during five brutal months in 1916. Before joining the Somme offensive, Canadian troops were engaged in fierce local battles across the Ypres Salient. At St. Eloi, the 2nd Division faced its first major combat, enduring chaotic trench warfare and over 1,300 casualties in just under two weeks. The 3rd Division’s baptism of fire came at Mount Sorrel. On June 2, German forces launched a devastating attack, leveling trenches and wiping out entire units in Sanctuary Wood. Though initial counterattacks failed, Canadian forces, under Lt-Gen. Julian Byng and Major-General Arthur Currie, launched a carefully planned assault on June 13, retaking Mount Sorrel and Hill 62 in a rare, clear-cut victory. The price was steep: over 8,400 Canadian casualties. This memorial stands not just as a marker of that sacrifice, but as a reminder of Canada’s growing identity and determination forged on these very slopes.

Building urban hides in haunted structures with @tomahawkperformanceinc “In overwatch operations, an urban hide serves as a concealed position from which a sniper can monitor an area and provide surveillance or fire support for a maneuvering unit. Positioned in a hidden or elevated location within the urban environment, it allows the observer to track enemy movements, identify threats, and relay critical information to the unit without being detected. The role of the urban hide in overwatch is crucial for ensuring the safety and effectiveness of ground forces, as it enables precise targeting of high-value threats or providing cover fire when needed, all while maintaining the element of surprise.” — @chatgpt #combatcamera #comcam #comcamcanada #army #armylife #militarylife #militaryphotographer #militaryphotojournalist #combatcamerateam #canoncanada #findwhatyourelookingfor

Brown butter miso chocolate chip cookies. I never expected to find miso in a cookie, but these home baked creations that @linying._ shared were surprisingly good. To celebrate the release of her EP House Mouse, she collaborated with @pazzogelato to create a limited edition flavour: sweet cream gelato mixed with these miso cookies in a caramelized coconut jam swirl. Flavours that reminded her of her home in Singapore and shared with others in a shop that she regularly visits with friends to celebrate special moments in their lives. We dropped by Pazzo the night before the release here for a preview of the finished product.
