/a kind of: “Books” [№005] ——— [№005] Contes initiatiques peuls — Amadou Hampâté Bâ (compiled and published posthumously in 1994) A collection of traditional Fulani (“Peul” in French) tales blending myth, wisdom, and initiation, tracing a moral and spiritual journey towards balance. Bâ was among the first to transcribe and preserve Africa’s oral traditions, working with UNESCO to safeguard this heritage. He witnessed the final years of traditional Africa through his elders, colonisation, and its decline. He famously said, “In Africa, when an elder dies, a library burns.” For this cover, I chose to portray Njeddo Dewal, “the mother of calamity”, a figure appearing in one of the tales, whose trials reveal wisdom through adversity. Rather than trying to appropriate cultural elements I am unfamiliar with, I chose a minimalistic and abstract approach — a faceless figure merging with geometric forms, distinguishable only by the faint silhouette of a nose, mouth, and chin. This image wasn’t meant to be a portrait initially, it resulted from an unrelated exploration on geometric shapes and textures, while coinciding with me reading the book. Myths and oral traditions are the deep memory of humanity, evolving yet continuous. Anthropologist and mythologist Jean-Loïc Le Quellec explains how many of the world’s narrative roots can be traced to Africa, where the first storytellers shaped the symbolic patterns we still recognise today all around the world.
