Happy new year from the Newtown Sound Collective 🔥 Stoked to be back in 2026 on @__mouthfull__ radio with another show concept called ‘Soundsystem Special’. Experiencing sound-system culture has shaped what we listen to immensely over the years and influenced our vision as a crew. Shout outs to further sound, third eye hifi, dub divination, roots fire sound and entity sound for the introduction back in our welly days. We are now thoroughly enjoying experiencing and having too many dances to choose from with the thriving sound system culture here in Naarm too! This year we’ll be paying homage to the culture by exploring different sound system associated genres ❤️‍🔥 First up dub 🫡🫡🫡 We air tommorow (Rahoroi/Saturday) Tune in on @__mouthfull__ @3 -5pm Aotearoa @1 -3pm Naarm Looking forward to this year and a special thanks to Mouthfull radio for having us on again ❤️‍🔥 Shoutouts to @3nvie for the fresh new cover 🫢

EPISODE 5 of our international dubs series and final show of the year with @__mouthfull__ is up for playback 💚 In this mix we explore the world of Jamaican dub, reggae, lovers rock, steppers and dancehall. Some history for those interested on the originators and experimenters of the coveted genre of dub… Jamaica is the birthplace of dub. Originating in the late 1960s in small Kingston studios. Legendary sound engineers, such as King Tubby, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Scientist, Errol Thompson and Joe Gibbs (and many others) invented and drove this sound into something truly revolutionary. These producers used their specialised mixing desks as instruments taking reggae to a whole new level. ‘Versions’ were born, leaving vocals out of tracks, showcasing drums and bass and manipulating sounds using echo, reverbs, delays and pitch shifts. Often dub tracks sat on the b-sides of reggae records. Bring these records to a sound clash and MCs would big up producers, engineers and speak, sing and rap over tracks. Add in a siren or two and you’re off skanking. We hope our international mix series has introduced you to only a small part of the huge diaspora and influence of dub and soundsystem adjacent genres across the world. We could not share this mix without acknowledging the communities in Jamaica who have been devastated by the impact of Hurricane Mellisa. Sending big love and care from our side of the world ❤️ To @__mouthfull__ ... Ngā mihi nui, Thank you. For letting us share our passion and selections. We love you and everything you do! 🌀 Huge love!!! Newtown Sound Crew ❤️💛💚

Better late than never! Episode 3 of our Newtown Sound mix on @__mouthfull__ UK dubs 🇬🇧 Theres no argument that the UK are a cornerstone in the conception of dubstep and continue to be a leading nation in the evolution of dub music. The windrush generation brought a diaspora of Caribbean immigrants who shared the legendary genres of reggae, dub and soundsytem culture from the late 60s, 70s and onwards. For this generation dub music and sound system culture created a symbol of solidarity and connection for those who felt displaced. Dub music and soundsytem culture quickly found a home in London and pioneering and legendary UK artists emerged… Madd Proffesor, Dennis Bovell, Adrian Sherwood, The Disciples…to name a few. 30 years later a new scene surfaced from the depths of South London. Coined ‘dubstep’ by Horsepower Productions, this new genre blended the deep bass and atmospheric sounds of dub and elements of dark garage, grime, 2step and broken beats. Dubstep greats from this era include… Mala & Coki (DMZ) Benga, Skream, Loefah Pinch, Kode9, Applebim, Peverlist, Joker, Plastician… the list goes on. 2 Hours of UK tunes ahead. Hour 1: @__vanj4 throwing down some old and new dubstep Hour 2: @doublepark3d explore more dub and sound system inspired sounds
