The prospect of playing live hopefully later this year has brought about a fresh focus in the studio. A new workflow designed for live performance using Ableton and the modular. I plan to perform parts of the new album, as dynamically as possible. I’m excited to be exploring new hardware and software. I hadn’t patched anything for months. It was good to be back on the hardware. Last night I learned more about programming drums in ableton. Some notes from the year in music: 1. I started subscribing to the @castlesinspace label. Superb releases all year round, perfect listening for the winter months. The drones and haunting soundscapes are shaping my own musical direction 2. Thanks to Philippe @prjgiron at @upsidedownrecords - sorted me out with some great records this year and got me back into discovering new music. Encyclopaedic music knowledge and legendary human being 3. Coalescence by Dillan Bastan. Just one of many devices that brought about my rotation towards inside the box. Thanks to @_landobe_ for sharing his inspirational work over the year 4. I found a box of CDs from the early 2000’s. At the time I had barely heard of the likes of Autechre.. 5. Thanks to @pietrobot and everyone at Igloo magazine. They included my last album Room Two in their albums of 2024, which gave me an injection of energy to push on with Colour Field. I will try to do more to support artists next year. 6. International Anthem records - I listened to a lot of jazz both old and new this year. IARC is more than jazz and can do no wrong IMO 7. Colour Field - the year ended with a release. Thanks for all the support @petitevictorycollective and everyone who has bought/downloaded/streamed it

Some thoughts on the recent release and my workflow 1. This track “Lament” is from 2022. It was recorded live from the hardware. It probably took me 20 goes but eventually it was done in a single take. I am reposting this, since I have been reflecting on the fact I have moved from one end of the workflow spectrum to the other. I find it hard to believe now that I was able produce one-take tracks. This track in particular was for a compilation where I was running up against a deadline. I was up until 2am for about a week. making music while under a bit of pressure (at least for me) resulted in me squeezing every ounce out of the hardware. It was different times: patches were up for weeks; I don’t think that environment and sonic output could ever be replicated in the box 2. Thanks for all the support and messages since Colour Field came out. The idea of people around the world listening to what had previously been kept under wraps on my hard drive for 12months is a humbling experience, particularly these days where it is easy to become saturated with so much music around 3. Peak hardware 4. Current state of the hardware. I sold a lot off, maybe I went too far. I miss the flow state. @__shimura__ ’s new album ‘Colour Fields’ is out now on Petite Victory Collective. Colour Field is shrouded in a beautiful darkness. Haunting choral tones transcend IDM, breakbeat and UKG. The fractured rhythmic structures might be familiar but Colour Field is an excursion into fresh audio territory. The title takes inspiration from the works of Mark Rothko, whose immersive colour field paintings provoke a response that lies at the intersection of tragedy, ecstasy and doom. Colour Field marks shimura’s transition towards Ableton/Max and away from Eurorack: during the 12month recording process, his modular setup was stripped back, leaving the “Vhikk X” module at the heart of what remained. A highly experimental drone voice, the Vhikk X captures the emotional essence of the album and can be heard throughout. This change in workflow brought about a concentrated period of creative output, quickly bringing to life several ideas that had previously lingered in the shadows. Here’s a personal note from shimura: “Thanks to Greg at @noisefloorrecordings . The mastering work is spot on as ever, but it’s so much more than that. After working solo for 12 months, letting someone else in at the final stage is a unique dynamic. Having someone you can trust makes all the difference. Huge thanks to @ashfarrand.design for completely nailing the artwork, and to @dancon_1.2 for the brilliant video for Angel Of { }. Having a lot of fun with the modular at the moment. Also appreciating the pulsar for hi hats. The envelope is just right. I can reproduce the snare by sending it to an external VCA and envelope but I can’t get anywhere near reproducing the hats. Trying to break the mould. I’ve spent time recently experimenting just with oscillator, VCA, filter + modulation sources. Mainly to understand the basics better which I think has paid off. For me, plaits without a filter didn’t sound very interesting…I’m running it in stereo through the Lester and then Databender, which achieves some nice movement. And using external VCA for pulsar snare, and modulating release time on the Quadrax envelope, to get variation in length. Fierce baseline from plaits. Which is another module where I struggle to find the sweet spot…but it has a lot of modulation possibilities which really open it up. Kermit on clock-synched modulation and then through the Lester for overdrive and more character. Movement in the hats from the pulsar is via the onboard delay which adds extra hits. I think the sounds from the Bass channel have so much character. I’ve considered selling the Pulsar in the past but this voice by itself means I’ll never sell it. Here it’s triggered by the pulsar LFO, synced to the master clock. Then fully wet through the PCH delay and then through Nautilus.
