In the process of creating “Who will make the history of tears?”, Gabriel Marmelo sought to work from a place of close proximity to the body and presence of Filippos Tsitsopoulos. The challenge was not only to record a performance, but to construct an image simultaneously with the action. He chose to follow the performer very closely, with a handheld camera, adopting an organic and unstable approach. Using a simple light mounted on the camera, he illuminated the performer, deciding what to reveal and what to leave in shadow. This established a dialogue between Filippos and Gabriel in the construction of an image that was being captured and projected in real time at the Estufa Fria. The projection surface was a tulle screen placed on the other side of the lake. This physical distance between the present body and its projected image created a tension that was central to the work: the details enlarged on the translucent fabric, permeated by the space, the natural environment, and the audience’s gaze, generated an immersive sense of involvement.
