Frequencies of Experience 003 — @lionessa666 So-called “Vancouver”-based DJ and community builder, Lionessa, expresses her Queer Egyptian-Canadian identity through unlikely blends of North African percussion, Arabic scales, and vocals that drive storytelling coupled with pulsating bass and an apathy towards any one specific genre of electronic music. Filled with hypnotic world sounds of darbuka, latin and afro influences, she aims to weave sounds that paint a journey of curiosity and questioning of times, expectations, and belonging. In Vancouver, Lionessa has supported globally prolific SWANA artists like Saliah and TootArd. She has closed down the iconic Cairo Jazz Club and performed on the golden coast of Dahab, Sinai. Her dream is to bring her culturally influenced sound to every corner of this planet and share moments of magic and movement with kindred souls. “Vancouver” is on the unceded territories xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. As an immigrant, Lionessa acknowledges that she is an uninvited setter on the lands she is based on. Frequencies of Experience 002 — @chainlettermusic mix & interview CHAINLETTER is a producer and dj whose music serves as a bridge, uniting people through collective experiences in late-night wormholes. Whether using CDJs or an unsuspectingly minimal hardware rig, the audience can expect to be enveloped by sounds that feel as warm as they do relentless. Focused primarily on ambient and techno, they use sequencers and synths to make time-expanding atmospheres, wonky rhythms, and slamming beats. Dedicated to DIY, CHAINLETTER has been actively involved in playing and organizing parties in the Durham, NC area since 2012. Together with a few friends, they started Triangle Rave Committee in 2019. TRC is a collective that aims to create safer dance spaces for queer and trans people, raise money for prisoners and other mutual aid projects, and provide a platform to local artists outside of conventional venues, primarily under highway overpasses and in the woods. CHAINLETTER is dedicated to advocating for increased access within the music industry for those who have historically been marginalized and denied opportunities, particularly other QTPOC. Frequencies of Experience 001 — @gliittermilk Jake (they/them) from Berkeley, California shares an original poem about movement, gender, and raving. Their mix in their own words: “It's a mix of tracks by queer, trans, and Bay Area artists, some new tracks I’ve been listening to, and some that are just like classics within my friend group... I sorta wanted to give it the arc of a night out. I think of it moving from a space of solitude into the rave and then back out into like a chill, floaty postgame with the homies”.
