“Silent Zone is a mini-survey of Michael’s work over the last 25 years. It’s about 50/50 drawings and paintings. There are double-sided paintings made this year alongside landscapes from the early 2000s. While his work has been collected by many, Michael has only formally exhibited his work a handful of times throughout his life.” Silent Zone by Michael Watson is up until May 9th and is not to be missed. @thesinisterworld

Michael Watson guides us through his exhibition, Silent Zone, and shares his initial thoughts and reactions to paintings and drawings he hasn’t seen in years - a rare glimpse at the humor Michael’s known for. Silent Sone is up through May 9th. @thesinisterworld “Michael Watson (b. 1955, Greenville, MS) is a self-taught, mixed-media artist from Memphis, TN. A self-professed horrorphile, Watson has spent the last sixty years exploring the uncanny, psychedelic, and macabre sides of Southern life. Known for his maximalist “visage” paintings, Michael creates atmospheric, anthropomorphic landscapes filled with innumerable shape-shifting faces—some recognizable, some comical, all undeniably haunted.“ We will be open this Saturday from 10-5, as part of the Fayetteville Gallery Hop. Thank you Gavin and @gxproductions for spending time with Michael, Pond, and thoughtfully documenting the show. Give GX a follow! As always, reach out to schedule a viewing outside of our weekend hours or to view an inventory list of available work. 💗

Tonight is the opening of Michael Watson’s solo exhibition, Silent Zone! This show surveys work made from 2006-2026. We’ll be hanging out with Michael from 5:30 - 8:00. We will also have a VERY limited edition of t-shirts available tonight commemorating Michael’s first exhibition in AR. First come, first serve! “Beginning with gestural marks and woven patterns, Watson’s paintings and drawings morph painstakingly from abstract color fields into faces, figures, animals, and appendages. His practice centers on a form of “self-induced pareidolia,” the psychological phenomenon of perceiving patterns—such as faces—in random or natural forms, akin to the childhood pastime of finding shapes in clouds. While there is an obsessive and frightening quality to Michael’s dense imagery, it also carries a quiet, dreamy, and magical quality, suggesting his landscapes represent interior spaces (as seen in Blue Bunny). The intense, focused labor behind his work offers Michael a meditative escape and catharsis from the chaos of daily life in Memphis.“ Image: Michael Watson, Out of the Box acrylic on board, double-sided, 7.5” x 10”, 2019
