MOTHERLAND Pt.3
Tangier
Tangier, Morocco, has a rich history that has been influenced by various civilizations and cultures; a place where Europe, Africa and Arabia blend to deliver a unique experience. The city’s free spirited bohemian atmosphere and its status as an international zone during the 20th century contributed to its reputation as a desirable destination for spies, artists, and writers of the Beat Generation era, attracting figures like Paul Bowles, William Burroughs and Truman Capote.
Tangier is also the home and birthplace of the legendary explorer, traveler and scholar, Ibn Battuta. Over a period of 30 years from 1325 to 1354, Battuta visited much of Africa, Asia, the Middle East and the Iberian peninsula. He travelled more than any other explorer in pre-modern history, totaling around 75,000 miles, surpassing Marco Polo (15,000 miles) and Zheng He (31,000 miles). He is also the author of one of the most famous travel books in history, commonly known as The Rihla (A Gift to Those Who Contemplate the Wonders of Cities and the Marvels of Travelling).
Tangier’s history as a strategic gateway between Africa and Europe, is a testament to its role as a crossroads of civilizations and its enduring appeal as a cultural and artistic hub.

The hijab, or headscarf, is often the most highly debated and contested symbol in Islam. In Morocco, the government does not mandate the hijab, wearing the headscarf is a common personal choice rather than a legal requirement. Many women wear it as a reflection of faith, identity, culture, and for some, social pressure. While the hijab remains a common part of daily life for a large number of Moroccan women, it is not universal, and its prevalence can vary based on social, regional, and individual factors.
